A lot of guys building the replica Nieuports use the go-kart wheels with
brakes like these:

In my neck of the woods, Dick Starks of
Dawn Patrol fame is a replica Nieuport guru.

The Dawn Patrol Nieuports I have seen use Worksman bicycle wheels. These
are especially strong wheels designed for commercial bikes, the kind used on
delivery carts and 3-wheelers I have seen pedaling along in NYC.

Go cart brakes are fine too. But then on a taildragger without a tailwheel
who needs brakes? People who fly Taylorcrafts don't use their brakes;
they are mechanically operated heel brakes adapted from Cushman scooters and
aren't much help anyway.

go kart wheels used to be specified for 4.00x4 wheels and originally
were perfectly adequate. however go karting changed from the old
"square" profile tyres to widened lowered racing wheels that now look
like scaled down formula 1 tyres. these are no longer really what you
want.

you can get 4.00x4 tyres and hubs from Jabiru in bundaberg.
(the tyres are beautiful. they're by trelleborg of sweden)

I have got to admit, I expected a lot of crap with this question. I'm
happy to see that not everyone has taken the experiment out of
experimental.

Anyone know what the speed and load rating on these are? Also, do the
brakes have enough power to stop 1200 lbs. decently?

use the length of the runway and the drag off the wings and flaps to
stop the aircraft.
brakes are for persuading, parking and holding during runups on
aircraft.

if the brakes on aircraft ever had enough oomph to be used for
stopping they'd be too damn heavy.

I saw a sub-scale Corsair over in Pell City that had go-kart
wheels/tires... this is the same plane that was at Newnan a couple years
ago.

While we're wheelin' & dealin'--what kinda slime do you put in your tubes to
keep 'em from leaking the air out.??

It doesn't matter what **** you put in a tube because it has no
reinforcing cords to maintain its shape. Any air pressure will cause
even a small pinhole puncture to enlarge, rendering any "slime"
useless. The only effective option is to remove the tube and put a
patch on it. Adding "slime" to a tube will only introduce a
contaminant, reducing the likelihood of a permanent patch.
