Also Super Cubs like the L-21.

It's a dog engine now because of the scarcity of parts.

It was also used (O-290-D2) in some early Piper Tri-Pacers. It really
isn't that much of a dog engine, as the whole top end is the same thing
as on the O-435 direct-drive series. Parts are available from El Reno
Aviation and are less expensive than some of the "modern" engines.

The 0-290D in my rebel came from a tri-pacer

Early Super Cubs, Piper Pacers and Tri Pacers were probably the most
numerous user of that engine, the very earliest versions of the Apache
(the Twin Stinson) had them but there was only one of these.

Several Mk's of the Auster used the Lycoming, apparently when they ran
short of Gipsies. Towed gliders with one such, 'way back when. Can't
recall excatly where but I do remember everyone insisted on speaking
Italian. (Probably when assigned to HSA Naples. We boughta the gas
so we getta to drive!)
