View Full Version : Where is Udvar-Hazy?

Jay Honeck
June 4th 05, 10:37 PM
I've been using the trial version of Keyhole (a VERY cool program,
available for download at http://www.keyhole.com/) to explore Dulles
International, in a vain attempt to figure out how in the world I'm
supposed to taxi to the Udvar-Hazy Center.

See http://www.alexisparkinn.com/DullesFromKeyhole.jpg

Can any of you DC-ites tell me where, on that photo, the Center is?

Thanks,

I may be wrong from memory, but isn't it off the bottom of the page (if
north is to the top)? It seems like a haul from the terminal based on
what I saw from the Hazy observation deck....

Kind of like OSH taxiing!

Jay,
the annex has a taxi way extension from Juliet (if memory serves me
correctly). The taxi way is there it is just which one I cannot
remember. You basically taxi to 1R and keep going strait.
It may be on the airport diagram.

Just so everyone knows Jay is coming in for part of a special event.
"Reach for the Sky: Become a Pilot" Family Day and Aviation Display on
June 11th. The museum doesn't have a "Taxiway" but rather a "Tow Road"
that can be used to taxi in for special events. There are two locked
gates between the airport and the museum.

I think most people wish we could just taxi down to the museum and it's
my understanding that was the original plan, but that was pre 9/11. One
of the building guys said the original plan had an airside pilot lounge
(of course that would probably have been the last thing built and the
maintenance facility and archives still aren't fully funded)

Reminds me of the joke about the Bonanza salesman that was trying to
sell the Cessna 180 owner/rancher on the virtures of the low wing.
Finally, the rancher tells the sales man, "If you can follow me to my
hangar, I'll buy your Bonanza."
The salesman taxis out and takes off behind the 180, following the
rancher to his private airstrip. After landing the salesman thinks the
sale is in the bag, until he comes to the taxiway leading to the hangar.
His jaw drops as he watches the 180 taxi through a gap in the barbed
wire fence between two fence posts, the high wings easily clearing the
tops of the tall posts.

Jay, it's right here: http://www.nasm.si.edu/visit/directions_uhc.cfm

(But you don't have to know where it is before you take a taxi to it.
Though you might want to ensure that the cabbie knows! New York is
infested with cabbies for whom both the city and the language is a
mystery.)

(And if you get a DC cab, settle the fare in advance. They don't use
meters in DC so that the Congress can set fares totheir advantage. VA
bans them from picking up fares, at least at Washington National, but
the cabbies used to hang around pretending to adjust things in the
trunk. Travelers in the know would get a cheap trip back into town.)

DC cabs can pick up fares to go back into DC or Maryland. They just
can't pick up people to go to Virginia from National. At DULLES, only
the Washington Flyer cabs are allowed to pick up at the terminal
(although the FBO's contract with others local companies).

The DC cabs all have a map that shows the fare zones. Of course, if you
are not familiar with the layout of the city, it's probably a mystery to
you.

Jay,

Make sure you know the location of P-40/R-4009 (Camp David) when you are
coming in from the North.

Is this going to be a Taylorcraft trip?

Thanks.

I watched the AOPA Powerpoint (or whatever) program (on their website) about
restricted airspace around Camp David last night. Looks like something to
stay WAY away from...

I'm sure ground control can give you progressive instructions Jay.
Anyways, like everyone said, the Center is below the map.

As long as you keep DC and Potomac river to your left, coming down from
the North, you should have no problem.

The road that connects U-H to Route 28 (which goes up the eastern
edge of the IAD property) passes just south of the approach end
of runway 1R. The U-H building is just to the west of the extended
centerline of taxiway J.

I've never checked, but looking at the taxi chart I would put the
lat/long coordinates for the museum somewhere around 38d55mN,
77d26.7mW.

Go to maps.google.com, locate the southeast corner of the Dulles
property, and ask for the satellite photo. It's a bit dated (still
showing the U-H under construction, and still showing the old
(nonpublic) Gate 4 access road, but it clearly shows where the
museum is located relative to the runways.

And no, I don't know what the taxi path would be to get there. I
was busy doing an astronomy dog-and-pony exhibit there a couple
of months ago and overheard a comment that anything being brought
to the building was by policy under tow (i.e., no taxiing on your
own) but that shouldn't be considered an authoratative statement
of how things are done there, but if it's correct the path to
the museum would not show up on any taxi chart.

Its indoors so it may be hard to see. Its right next to the VOR though.
There is a control tower there staffed by highly experienced tourists.

Were you there for Space Day? You are correct, everything that comes
down the "Tow Road" or "Garber Road" by policy is under tow EXCEPT for
the "up to four" approved fly-in events each year. In the year and a
half the museum has been open this is the first such event and it will
be PERFECT! This event will have up to 30 aircraft coming in (minus any
last minute things) and as the first event will be judged accordingly.
I hope to do it again next year (If I live through this year!).

Nope. I was invited to be part of the shindig but since it was during
the week I couldn't get away from the office...which turned out to be
a Good Thing since we had some crises (details NOT available) which
I had to handle. OTOH, one of the other people with whom I usually
run the invited astronomy exhibits at the Air & Space in downtown DC
got his picture in the _Washington Post_, letting a child look at the
Sun through a telescope (yes, with the appropriate safety equipment!).

The museum taxiway is at the south end of Taxiway J. If you are coming
down J, just keep going (provided we got the gate open).
