I've never seen the movie so I can't answer your question. What I
have seen is this question come up time and time again so a search of
the archives is probably in order.
Perhaps Ron should consider adding it to the FAQ?

A quick search on Google returned this tidbit of info from 1996:

The plane is a two place Lazair. It was originally manufactured by a
company in Ontario, CANADA. In Canada it qualifies as an ultralight.
Although they are no longer in production a dedicated bunch of
people love their Lazairs and have a fly in each year. For more info
contact Mike McKusick, he puts together a Lazair newsletter.

Alittle more info:

"I saw your question and must tell you that I do know the aeroplane was
actually custom-made for the movie by the film studios. In fact, it now
hangs in the ceiling of a restaurant (owned by the company) in
Bloemfontein, South Africa. Hope that helps you.

When you mentioned the "Lazair" that threw me because it was my
understanding that the "one-off plane" never actually flew as well...
One that runs on whiskey and can be foot launched might just come back
into fashion someday...
