View Full Version : Too close? Too small?

June 13th 05, 10:23 PM
Was flying a UH13ET recently and hit the tip of a blade on a tree. It
tore the end cap and the blades had to come off for inspection/repair.
Hmmm...a little too close.
Landing on an elevated pad about 10' off the ground and the skids hang
off front and back. Sometimes its a little dicey taking off with a load
and I left skid marks on the ground a couple times.
Flew under some wires yesterday during the takeoff. Seemed easier than
going over them since they were kind of high ones.
I think I'm gonna park the helicopter in an equipment yard instead of
the airport so I don't have to go so far to fly it. Problem is the
equipment is kind of close and not a whole lot of room for error.
Still, it's an interesting confined area to fly in and out of. Wires,
trees, agricultural equipment, and a big barn.
Not crazy about trying to fly into that one in the dark though.
So far in the past 9 days I've flown about 30 hours. that makes for
long days huh?
Oh well, I'm enjoying hell out of myself as long as nothing breaks.

June 14th 05, 06:39 AM
I didn't think remote-controled helicopter wannabe's were allowed here.
Go away, you liar.

Lets correct that to a UH12ET. The one I'm flying now began life as an
Army OH13. Rain this morning so I didn't get to fly all that long.
Little over an hour was all. Still landed on the small pad about 14
times before we called it quits.

June 14th 05, 04:34 PM
Didn't even bother to ask what that was all about? Geeezzzz....don't
bother to read anymore of my posts then and don't learn something new.
This board seemed to be getting stale so I thought I'd toss out
something for discussion. Ummmm, last time I looked in my logbook it
was pushing pretty hard on 22,000 hours and well over 8000 in
helicopters. How about you? In addition, my licenses read ATP, MEL,
SELS, IFR Rotor, CFI/IRAM. Long ways from a wannabe.........

Last time I looked in my logbook there it was..... the twenty five
dollar introductory flight from Cessna.

All forty five minutes of it...... heavy sigh.

I doubt that it would make any difference, Beav. Folks that go as far out
of their way as that guy did to show what kind of asses they can be are
rarely open minded enough to get embarrassed.

In your first post you state that you had a blade strike, flew under
wires, landed on an obviously too small pad and parked too close to a
building in a very confined area.
What are you trying to do, catch the attention of your local FSO? Or
just displaying every possible bad move all at once?
Where do you fly and for whom? I still say you are an RC guy...

He was probably trying to save his butt.

As an experienced helicopter pilot isn't that what you would be doing
if you happened to have a blade strike, close to wires, in poor
terrain, with very limited landing space.

Speaking of experienced helicopter pilots.... You havn't established
your credentials here yet have you sunny.

As for me.... I'm just a lurker, sometime participant, and armchair
pilot so the only logical comment I can make is that it sounds like
good piloting to me.

And you sound like a troll.

> Where do you fly and for whom? I still say you are an RC guy...

I would be willing to bet that the majority of regulars will decide all
on their own that you are an idiot.

June 15th 05, 03:02 PM
No experienced rotorcraft pilot would even consider flying UNDER wires,
landing on an obviously too small pad and mention that they had a blade
strike non-chalantly, as if it was a smudge on the windshield.
I am a licensed private pilot flying in southern Virginia. Really.
This moron is just that: a moron who is dreaming about flying and
laughing as you guys lap up his BS.

Well maybe incidents like that in the real world experience and day to
day operations of a real life helicopter pilot are what sets apart
people like that with experience who encounter those situations and
people like you who cruise into this group out of the blue with
a private pilots license who proceed to tell us that you know more
than everyone else in this group combined.

Since you havn't established your bona fides in this group then
I daresay that the moron with bull**** coming out of their mouths
is you.

I'll be happy to forward our hero's commnets to his local FSO if he'll
tell me where he flys.
I have been here for a long time. I just don't post much.
Sorry if you are mad with me. If you were a pilot you would understand
how bad this guy's posts are. YOU DO NOT DO THE THINGS HE PURPORTS TO
DO IN REAL LIFE.
He claimed he ruined a blade the way I'd mention the time of day.
Do you have any idea the costs there. I do. I have owned 2 helicopters.

So what..... Even if he is - at least his BS sounds a
lot friendlier than the crap out of your mouth.

June 15th 05, 07:56 PM
Well you have certainly established your lack of experience in
agricultural aviation aka crop dusting? I've got more than 12,000 hours
in the lowest reaches of the airspace system flying all over the world.
A few of the older people here may recall my Ol Shy & Bashful title.
Some may remember Flyinrock? Not too hard to prove my bonafides and
experience.
Look back in older issues of Ag Pilot International magazine and you'll
see quite a few of my articles complete with photos etc. My pilot
certificate number is 1550330 and was issued over 40 years ago.
Still think I'm full of BS? Do you have any idea of what FAR 137 is?

Indeed... As you have done many times in the past.

Good thing you never mentioned flying out of the bed of a pickup truck
hundreds of times a day..... Why that might get a certain sack of
potatoes all lathered up and threatening to call the local FSO.

Not true... I've never done it because its never come up But....
If you had a big wind direct across high tension wires coming
out of a confined area it could in fact be safer to go under them.
Hover taxing under wires 75 feet above you could be a buttload
safer than pulling 99% straight up 120 feet to go over them.

Kinda noticed you said "licensed private pilot" but not rotorcraft.
Not all the sage wisdom from Stuckwing land applies in Choppertown.
And before you rip on me too, I own and fly both kinds.

My license is in Rotorcraft. This IS a rotorcraft forum isn't it??? How

Yunno Mark I could be mad, beligerant, insult you like you are
insulting others in this group starting with an individual who has
far more credibility than you will ever have.

But instead I will simply ask you what is your point of being in this
group.

Besides trolling just what is your reason for being here.

As an armchair lurker with nothing more than an interest in aviation
even I can see that you have some serious personality issues.

What is it that you want. What do you feel that we owe you.

Why should anyone here believe even one word you say or give
one tinker's damn if it's true or not.

So you have owned two helicopters... BIG ****ING DEAL.

You can continue to be as snotty in this group as you like.

The majority will toy with you, some will debate you, some will
just plonk and ignore you.

Sooner or later you will realize you have no friends here when you
could have had many.

Nobody will be interested in what you have to say.

And sooner or later you will get fed up and tired of kicking sand when
nobody gives a damn.

And then one day you will be gone and nobody will care.

At your current rate I would daresay the majority will hope that it is
sooner than later.

June 16th 05, 03:26 PM
Shiver,
My "point" to posting here at all was merely to ask a guy why he'd
seemingly make flippant comments about flying under wires, landing on
too small a pad and talk about blade strikes as if they were
yesterday's mashed potatoes.
Not very smart things to do, in my opinion. His post made his attitude
towards safety seem like it is not a big deal. And he claims to be an
AG pilot and has this "who-cares" attitude in regards to safety.
PS
His comment about flying under wires (and he didn't say they were 150'
in the air) was absurd, as well as landing on a too small pad and the
blade-strike thing just did it.
Keep listening to him...

Flying under wires is not a big thing when done with care. Anyone who
has done any amount of search and rescue, mountain work, power line
stuff has flown under wires. As a matter of fact, when you are low
level like that, it can be SAFER to fly under the wires.

But maybe you are the kind that advocates flying always at 1,000' and
only landing at an airport.

He wasn't in any SAR mode when he flippantly remarked about flying
under wires. After seemingly not caring that he ruined a rotor blade.
After he didn't care that he was landing on a too small platform.
What's next? "Oh, I took off with less fuel than needed so I ended up
autoing into the field....yawn, all in day's flying..."
Any person here who think's that his original post in this thread is

I bet that's one whole year more than you have, prick.

June 16th 05, 10:44 PM
Boy you have really fed into this one haven't you? OK...how about
this..I flew 12 hours yesterday and never got above 500'agl. I flew 8
hours today, made more than 75 landings on that too small pad on top of
a truck and landed it crossways. I usually fly at or below 10'agl at
60kts which if you check on nearly any helicopter, puts me deep into
the "deadmans curve". I flew close to wires, probably within 10' on
some of them, didn't need to fly under any of them. Didn't hit anything
but a few birds that flushed while I was merrily grinding along at 10"
over a potato field.
I'm trying to pass along some hard earned experience to those smart
enough to listen. You obviously are not going to be part of that group.
I'm wondering if you have ever made an off airport landing with a
helicopter.
What is a too small pad? I see operators land on carts to put their
machines away all the time and they barely have enough room for the
skids. I have landed on many trailers that the skids barely fit.
I love it when someone challenges my comments and statements. Partly
out of a sense of humor, and partly because the devil made me do it. It
isn't too late to ask some civil questions and I'll give you civil
considered answers. Otherwise, if your shorts are in a knot and you
continue to be abrasive and calling me a liar, you may as well look
someplace else. How about checking out JustHelicopters.com if you want
some fun. The original forum is pretty raucus and the newer one is for
serious questions. You can find me in both of them. be prepared to wear
asbestos if you try your pompous attitudes there. they'll have a ball
frying you.

Potatohead.... I would think the owner would be happy to keep signing
those checks.

Better to have the pilot come back alive with a dinged machine than the
NTSB crawling all over the place picking pieces of a dead pilot out of
the machine.

Since you have obviously read Rocky's previous post detailing what a
flying day is like why don't you come back to the group and tell us
in great detail about what one of your flying days are like.

Weasel words....

In other words you are a recreational pilot.

You must be.

You see Potatohead..... Rocky comes into the group with about
40 years experience and gives us paragraphs of descriptive narrative
detailing just what one day is like as an AG helicopter pilot.

You wimp in here with two meagre sentances infering you fly quite often.

To many private pilots burning off an hour a month is flying quite
often.

So let's be more specific.....

How many hours do you have in your logbook.

No weasel words, or slip sliding around the question.

Specifically ------> How many hours do you have in your logbook.

> I AM rated. I bet you aren't.

Potatohead.... Don't you remember one of my very first comments to you
was that I am an armchair pilot and general lurker in this group.

What part of armchair pilot don't you understand.

Well if there is anybody reading this who needs that final convincing
that Mark is indeed a potatohead all they have to do is read the above
paragraph.

If he had just half a brain he would know that these are not
"Google sites" and that Google does not moderate them or delete
any posts.... extraneous or not.

This is usenet Mr. Potatohead.... Not Google.

Google neither owns it, nor controls it.... period.

They strictly archive the posts and allow stupid people like you to
post to newsgroups like this, through their system.

And if you are that stupid to be actually surfing, and reading
newsgroups through Google, as apposed to the vast majority that
use either newsreaders or gag me.... Outlook Express, then with
all due respect... you are dumber than a sack of hammers.

But then your postings these past few days have shown just how
stupid you really are.

weasel words Potatohead..... weasel words.

You have indeed been expending a lot of energy.

That's been your problem Mark - Expending all that energy
in the wrong direction.

Instead of coming through the front door like a mature gentleman and

for whatever reason to come in through the back door and spit on people
who are well known in this group, well respected, and liked, and who
unlike you, have qualifications that are impeccable, verifiable, and
beyond reproach.

Instead of being decent you decided to use weasel words, side stepping
issues, threatening to report people, infering you are superior to
everyone else here, that somehow we are all jealous.....

And for that alone you are indeed delusional.

For someone who claims to have owned two helicopters you just seem to
be having a real tough time answering that simple question.

Why do you ask? Jealous, eh?! Sorry you don't.
Go back to those comic books and remotes.
By the by, Google is the name at the top of each page.
Sorry, I am not an internet junkie like yourself so I don't know all
the "who owns what" rules.
Goodbye, morons.

What's really sad Kevin is that this group is not overwhelmed
by posters, and participants, especially qualified pilots, and owners.

Had Mark come through the front door he would have been welcomed
by everyone.

The more the merrier.

Nobody is knocking him for his accomplishments in obtaining
a helicopter license or for possibly owning a helicopter.

It's his attitude that did it in, plain and simple.

Whether we like it or not... everybody has to live by their words on
usenet, good bad or indifferent. And sometimes when a person starts off
on the wrong foot it becomes very difficult if not impossible for them
to backtrack, make things right, and start over.

Such is the nature of that beast called usenet.

Personally I wish him all the best in the future and hope that all his
flights end safely when the skids touch the ground.

I don't know what he was looking for in this group or what sort of
reception he expected, but it appears that he did not find the response
he was looking for, and if he is to be taken at his word he has made
his goodbyes and hopefully this thread can die it's natural death.

Such is the nature of that beast called usenet.

Sorry to see your attitude contra the group and their views. Seems like
you really stepped on your dick. I was willing to trade off some good
info but you blew it off calling me a liar and never took time to see
that I was having some fun. I am who I say I am, can do what I say I
can, have done what I said I did, and left out a lot of stuff that
would probably make your hair fall out.
>From your posts, you have a limited amount of experience in the R-22's,
have a greatly exaggerated sense of accomplishment, and are a pompous
clown. You also have a limited vocabulary and resort to profanity when
good english fails you.
I suspect you will take umbrage and not come back after the roasting
you have been given here by people who, for the most part, are
interesting, knowledgeable, funny, friendly, and quick to take apart
anyone who brashly jumps in and makes snap decisions based on little or
no information.
I'd be happy to see any response in a coherent manner and challenge you
to do so.
Cheers
Rocky
ps: how many flying hours DO you have? Doing what?

June 18th 05, 10:56 PM
Because my flying is serious, and not much room for error, many don't
believe how close to the edges of the envelope ag pilots fly. Certainly
you haven't a clue. Because I fly so close to that "envelope" edge I
have to take flight safety very seriously. Much more so than the
average pilot. But, that is a double edged comment. Because I fly so
much and so close to the edge, I am much better prepared than the
average pilot who can't begin to imagine how fast things can turn to
**** no matter how good you are.
I have flown under wires that were close enough to cause a wire strike
one night. Fortunately I got the Hiller 12E back on the ground in one
piece. we switched the blades the next day and I went back to work. for
me, working under wires is no big deal. Certainly it requires a careful
look by flying parallel to the wire to make sure of clearance even with
a tilted rotor disk, and clearance on either side for the
approach/departure. Pad size has been discussed and you must need a
whole ten acres to land in? I regularly make 75-100 landings a day on
top of my nurse rig truck. Sometimes its tricky if the wind gets
squirrley but I seldom have to make a go around for another try. Time
is money in the ag business and the safety of my crew is paramount.
I have also been an FAA Accident Counselor and frequently gave safety
talks to FAA fly in events. You don't have a clue who I am, and you
don't care to listen. Your mind is made up like Dan Rather so I won't
try to confuse you with facts.
I hope your flying technique is better than the attitude you presented
here or you'll end up on the News at 9.
My attitude on aviation is grounded on facts and experience. What about
yours?

This is hillarious. Are you all yankees? Used to cussing each other out
one minute and french kissing the next?? You want me to now respond
after you used profanity towards ME? I never once accosted you here
other than to doubt or question your flippant attitude. (Which I still
do) Oh by the way, I am not the one ag flying for 50 grand a year here,
so don't talk about my limited vocab, dude. If all you make is 50 grand
YOU are the limited one.
Now please go back to your tales of blade strikes and bravado and bask
in the attention you garner from the saps here.
Best wishes.

No potatohead... It is actually a very sad reflection
that this is the absolute best you are capable of.

Keep it up as long as you want Mark.

Every time someone opens their mouth in a group like this, the people
reading the posts get to make a value judgement on the person making
the comments.

That means that every time YOU open your mouth in this group everyone
reading your drivel makes a value judgement on YOU.

Your only response to those with obviously much more experience in life
and aviation is to stamp your feet in exasperation, and your trivial
and childish responses clearly show that to the group.

It must really torque your cookies to be sitting at your computer
reading the comments made by those with more experience and realize
that their efforts are actually appreciated and read with some interest
while the comments that you keep making are also read by the group and
dismissed as childish and laughable.

As I have stated a few times already Mark... Your decision to come in
through the back door and act like a potatohead was a decision you made
all on your own.

Stamping your feet in blind rage and frustration will not negate that
fact today tomorrow or ever.

Keep it up as long as you want.

That's the beauty of usenet potatohead, you can be as stupid, obnoxious,
and childish as you want.

It won't get you respect or the admiration of the group and over a
period of time some will just kill filter you, or totally ignore you as
the majority in this group are doing, or hold you up to the light of
day as I have been doing and show you up for the buffoon you really
are.

And one day when you finally realize that nobody likes you or wants you
around, that they realize you have nothing to add to this group but
garbage and they could care less about you and your lousy attitude,
well
on that day Mark you will finally fade away into obscurity which is
exactly the road you are on right now.

Unless you are working ag pilot, where you fly under wires pretty
regularly & work off tiny elevated pads every single day. The only
unusual thing was the (very minor) blade strike, and I'll bet he
doesn't do *that* every day!

Now, bird strikes are a totally different ballgame - can't begin to
tell you how many I hit while doing ag work...and yes, I flew off tiny
pads & under wires too.

Well howdy Brett.... And thanks for jumping in.

WOW - Another AG pilot.... I'll bet you and Rocky could
swap stories all day long.

Can I entice you to write a descriptive narrative about your life
as an AG pilot and professional helicopter pilot in general.

It's always interesting when someone describes their day to day
activities in the field of helicopter aviation and speaking for
myself... as a lurker.... I'd sure like to read about your exploits.

Be as wordy as you'd like.

GOT PICTURES.

Cause if you do and you decide to post them to
alt.binaries.pictures.aviation not only would
they enjoy them but we would too.

In any event... welcome to the group.
