Butyrate, lacquer thinner, STC,etc

First off, I'll order the appropriate butyrate thinner from ATS this
morning, so I'll be following the Ceconite process.

Yesterday I found myself out of thinner. Went to the net and got some
indications that lacquer thinner would act as a thinner. I have a frame
holding some Ceconite that's been shrunk, nitrated and silvered. I
diluted some colored Butyrate with lacquer thinner and applied it.
Looks beautiful.I'll apply a second coat later today, just for grins.

Although I know the correct thing to do, I was sorely tempted to use
lacquer thinner.

Does anyone know the process of determining if diluting with lacquer
thinner is better/worse/no different from following the STC?

I've read about the Whittman crash, I believe in A/N hardware; for some
reason however, not being able to do what appears to be an equivalent
process is very irksome. - Mike

when I used thined dope for tissue covered models laquer thinners
would give me a crepe paper effect indicating that water was present.
switched to acrylic thinners and got immediate very good results.
not sure whether we were using butryate or nitrate dope though.
acrylic thinners worked on every dope job I did for years.

mind you this is in Australia. your chemistry may vary.

Being that the lacquer thinner is used on the color top coats and not
on the base coats, it is unlikely to cause problems... However,
following the Ceconite instructions is best, as you intend to do...

Members of our local EAA chapter recovered the Wittman's O&O Special
after the crash... The ceconite was glued down and finished with
traditional dope (for cotton) and our analysis is that the dacron
fabric pulled up through the dope and the elevator fluttered... Yes,
the hinge to elevator spar bolts were not AN hardware but would have
not failed under normal flight loads...

Well of course the chemistry varies. Being down-under you have to mix the
dope counter clockwise as you thin it.
