View Full Version : Passed the checkride, now I need a good GPS, and passenger headset

C. Osbourne

YIPPEE! I'm now a private pilot!

I took and passed, the private pilot checkride on Tuesday.
What a relief! It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought I'd
be, and went very well.

Now I need an aviation GPS and 'Guest Headset', and I'm
hoping that readers of this list will have recommendations
about what to get, and where to buy it. Yes, I've seen
the eBay auctions, and I'm thinking of a higher end GPS,
maybe even color.

Any suggestions or experiences with specific models and
vendors will greatly help!

Please answer here.

Congrats! You have achieved something most humans never dream of....

As far as a headset purchase, you NEVER buy a "guest" headset. Rather, you
buy yourself the latest and greatest, thus relegating your old headset to
"guest" status.

:-)

I can't recommend enough the Lightspeed Twenty 3G. It's got great ANR,
bass, treble, and balance controls (it's stereo, of course) and a built-in
cell-phone (or MP3) input.

Best of all, it's proven to be extremely durable, unlike earlier Lightspeed
models.

As far as GPS goes, if you're looking for color, you can't go wrong with the
AvMap. (See http://www.avmapnavigation.com/) We've flown behind the AvMap
IIIC's giant color screen for almost two years now (it's STILL the biggest
color screen on the market, although the IV looks even better), and have
never been happier. It absolutely changed the way we fly, and contains
everything -- radio frequencies, instrument approaches, ground obstructions,
you name it.

Good luck, and have fun!

I have not been particularly happy with my Garmin 296, though it's fun
to play with on the ground. Often I find myself yearning for the
little Toblerone bar of the Garmin III+, which I see is still
available as a Garmin 5 or V.

Tell you what: give me a Garmin 5 and a thousand bucks, and the 296 is
yours.

I just bought a ANR headset from Pacific Coast Avionics. Its a Light
Speed with their name on it.
It was $249.00/
Lots cheaper than the branded model and same exact headset.
Should have done it sooner.

I'm one cheap *******, but this was well worth it.

Congrats and keep flying!!

i've been flying for about 30 years now and wonder how many folks are
still flying without owning an airplane.

My question is : How many people still fly after five years and
haven't/don't own an airplane?

I didn't buy my airplane until almost 7 years after getting my certificate

I have flown for more like twenty years and don't own. I recently
joined a flying club though, so I like sort of own.

I lasted almost 4 months, before the whole renting thing got to me.
First bought an Ercoupe (for 2 years and 200 hours) and then a 172 (for
2 years and 200 hours). Wouldn't have it any other way.

For me the trigger was getting my instrument ticket. With the huge increase
in utility, the constraints of renting became too painful.

Almost 2700 hours and have never owned. Probably never will.

Ha! We all thought that, once.

After setting up the baby-sitter, the weather, the mother-in-law, the cars,
and the time off work, only to have the rental plane:

a) Down for a 100-hour inspection
b) Out on a cross-country and hasn't returned on time
c) Out with a guy who needed it for his checkride that was postponed
d) Found with the master switch on...and the FBO's closed

After this happened to us one too many times, Mary turned to me and snapped
"Why don't you buy a plane!"...

It was the fourth happiest day of my life.

Not long after I got my ticket, the same instructor (he became
stereotyped, and got all the old farts as students) had a guy who was
so enthusiastic that he bought a Cub while in training. It was a bad
scene because the FAA took six months to cough out his physical.

But all's swell that ends swell. He got the ticket and decided to
up-engine the Cub. It proved such an expensive project that he invited
the instructor to come in with him as half-owner, so John wrote him a
check.

But then the newly minted pilot and up-engined Cub owner never was
able to find time to fly. The result is that John for all practical
purpose has the plane all to himself.

So there you are: a guy who bought a plane and doesn't fly any more.
While am I am still flying, never having owned one.

Yeah, it was a challenging but fun aircraft (if you had to be a SAC bomber
pilot). I'd applied for the SR-71 out of B-52Hs at Minot, ND, for 5 years.
I heard that the SAC personel guy in charge of manning the 71 was also
manning the B-58. He must have figured I just wanted to go fast, so without
having initially volunteered for the program I got orders to Little Rock
AFB, AR for interview and to see if I'd fit in the capsule. I JUST BARELY
fit. They had a capsule in a hangar they put you in, closed it up, and you
had to be able to turn sideways and get the survival radio out of the
backing behind you. I had my left shoulder jammed into the backrest with my
right shoulder jammed against the closed capsule doors. I grunted and
strained with knuckles bleeding until I finally got the %&^%$()*# radio out.
I'd almost given up. So, later I went to Perrin to fly the T-33 and F-102
to get current again flying with a stick and Delta wing characteristics.
Then to Little Rock for final training in the B-58.

I only fly as an expensive hobby, not for essential transportation, so if my
regular rental is down or unavailable for any reason, it's merely a
disappointment.

The wife isn't fond of flying much, let alone in small planes. She's flown
with me 3 times in 5 years and I had to practically beg each time. I will
say that now that I have the instrument rating, she's said she feels a bit
safer and might take short trips (~1 hour) to relatively close destinations
like Asheville, NC.

I will agree that I used to think that getting the license itself would
never happen. (And the ST1100 too.) But once the kids were adults and I had
a few extra dollars she didn't argue very much. But when it gets down to it,
she likes boats, not planes, I like planes, not boats. We both like
motorcycles, so we can agree somewhat.

I guess I'm lucky. My wife gets seasick on ocean liners, so small boats are
out. Neither if us are into motorcycles (we like our skin too much, I
guess). We both love to travel, and she "tolerates" the getting there part
(which is more than half the fun for me if it's in the Arrow).

Thanks for the head's up, Ken. I used these guys to re-do the faceplates in
my old Warrior, and they turned out fantastically, and reasonably priced,
too. (Well, in aviation dollars.)

Unfortunately, the faceplate on my Narco audio panel is structural, in that
it holds internal things together. These guys only make inserts to cover
scratched and discolored faceplates. (The CP-136 isn't listed in their
catalog...)

(BTW: Wouldn't you think they MIGHT update their website once in a while?
They're still advertising their "upcoming" appearance at Sun N Fun!)
