According to Airnav, Lodi has three public airports within 4 miles.
One is listed as having skydive operations.
The C182 is a very popular jump ship (forget they showed a picture of
the RG, that's almost certainly a random C182 from the photo library).
Guess where the jump pilot may decide to circle down, in left turns
after dropping a load?
I love these conspiracy theorists.

That *is* funny!
After working in newspapers for over 20 years, I'm surprised something that
stupid actually made it to press. Usually there's a crusty old editor
somewhere in the process that stops the young pup reporter and says "Wait a
minute here..."

Well, I agree the length and speculative nature of the article really
give the impression that column space is not costly and people don't
have that much to think about up in Lodi!
On the other hand, the photo appears to be real, as the N number
(N-6458T)coincides with what the reporter says about the plane. Who
hired the air-to-air photography? Someone has put some big effort into
this amateurish-sounding article.
Reading other articles from the same rag, it appears there is a
significant anti-terror investigation going on there, with some arrests
having been made, and political turmoil in the local Mosque. In this
context, the type of surveillance operation the writer refers to may not
be far off the mark. One wonders what the writer may have against that.
This would be an opportunity for someone to point out the vital role
that GA aircraft have always had in law enforcement - and from there we
could get into environmental protection, gelogical survey,
(including photogrammetry for map making) meteorological services and
business enhancement like real estate survey. It appears they have just
approved a large commercial development there, including Wal-Mart.
It is obvious the writer has spent a lot of energy and probably some
money to investigate the matter, and appears eager to incite some
controversy over it. While we can only respect her legitimate defense of
people's right to know, one wonders why she should feel harrassed,
rather than reassured, by the presence of what she appears convinced is
a law enforcement initiative, and possibly an anti-terrorist
investigation.
It was bad enough when little planes got scapegoated for terror attacks
they had nothing to do with, and could not have perpetrated if they
wanted - but now even Feds in anti-terror investigation planes are being
used to spread panic and mistrust. Cant' win!

I'd guess over the airport, not the city some four miles away.

And it's a modified or very old photo too. The N# comes back to a BELL 47
helicopter.

No it doesn't. Try changing your "1" at he end to a "T".
I made the same mistake at first.

Very probably a poorly researched story. May or may not be true.
However, the FBI does use Cessnas for surveillance. I personally knew
one of their pilots. She flew mostly in the NYC area, but made an
occasional trip to the western part of the country.

How about this:
"Plane Crashes in NY as Pilot Parachutes Out
Haverstraw, NY - An empty small plane crashed in the Hudson River off
Bowline Point Park yesterday after the pilot suffered leg pains and
parachuted out.
The unidentified pilot, who landed in the water and was rescued, didn't
suffer any serious injuries, Rockland County executive's office spokeswoman
C.J. Miller said. The pilot bailed out because he had leg pins and couldn't
pull the plane out of a dive, Miller said.
The plane went down at 4:41 pm, Haverstraw Police Department dispatcher
Edward Lopez said.
The Cirrus SR22 fixed-wing single-engined plane was lost on radar about 10
miles from Westchester County Airport, FAA spokeswoman Arlene Salac said.
____________________________________________
Now the news last night mentioned that the airplane had a parachute, which
was deployed. Perhaps the pilot also had a parachute (a real belt and
braces kind of guy!) and decided that the Cirrus one wasn't big enough, but
I somehow doubt it.
Leg pains prevent you from pulling out of dive? Huh?

"A power outage following a meteor sighting gets the residents of Maple

You will notice the photo was provided by a Ken Cantrell. There is a Ken
Cantrell in the FAA data base that lives in Lodi CA. Looks like he built an
RV-6. He posts to the Matronics RV list and he has a repaiman's cert for
one.
I wonder if MIBs have visited him yet.

In one section, but earlier it said "Haverstraw, NY - An empty small plane
crashed in the Hudson River off Bowline Point Park yesterday after the pilot
suffered leg *pains* and parachuted out."

Did it say what was wrong with his leg? Jumping out of an airplane because

Especially seeing as that is the first part of the body to hit when under a
parachute. I suspect something is amiss in the story being reported.
