View Full Version : Hurricane Dennis

Hello All,

I guess I'll get out the boards and spend the day battening down the hatches
while the sun still shines. The plane probably needs to be moved somewhere
out of the line of fire also. We're doing the hurricane dance down here
along the Redneck Riviera. Hate to send it to you Texas, but we really
don't want it here.....sorta like "Not in my backyard".

Yeah, goddamit, here we go AGAIN!

I'm making plans to fly the airplane out on Saturday morning. Probably fly
to New Orleans and drive a rent car back. Then spend two or three days (at
least) schlepping gas to the generator and cleaning debris from the yard, if
we're lucky.

I'm really getting sick of this crap.

Given the most recent 5 day track...

It doesn't seem like New Orleans is far enough away (plus, it's below sea
level).

Try Duluth - no earthquakes, few tornados, no mudslides, no grass
fires. A solid month at 20 below, but heck, you can dress for that :-)

Funny you should mention that. My best buddy from high school and his wife
are coming from California to Mobile this weekend for a scientific
conference. They were planning on turning it into a mini-vacation; they have
a B&B booked on Dauphin Island (oops!) and everything. He remarked that they
will be glad to be getting a break from all the earthquakes they've been
having lately. Ha!

Anyhow, I know tropical storms and hurricanes come with the territory, but
EVERY FREAKIN' YEAR? It just ain't right. The four named storms so far this
year are the most *ever* this early in the season. And you saw what happened
last year. Something's screwy, I tell ya'. It's enough to make me sell the
business and move.

That's why I said "probably." By Friday night I'll be sure enough.

Too GD far to drive. Anyway, Huntsville might also be in the path of the
storm, which could still be spawning tornadoes as it moves north.

The way to avoid a hurricane is to dodge it, not run in front of it. By
Friday night I'll know whether to go east or west.

Come to Western NC. We don't get hurricanes, here.... Oh wait. I almost
forgot about that storm named Hugo!.. <g>

We are getting the **** kicked out of us today, with torrential rains,
flooding, nonstop lightening (during the cells) and tornadoes. I was less
than 10 miles from a touchdown, today.

You can come to PA and not have to worry (much anyway) about hurricanes.
However, we do have these little events called blizzards and ice storms...

Come on out to Phoenix, came out from FL last october, haven't seen a
hurricane yet (after having evacuated from landfall sights for Frances and
Jeane, and having the remnants of Ivan spin across my place at midnight
scaring the **** out of me as my apartment literally shook), however the
cave creek fire has given us a bit of smoke from time to time. Only real
downside is that there are 2 seasons... Summer, and Hell. But after flying
in FL, I can honestly say that flying out here is no more uncomfortable than
mid 90s and super high humidity.

Tropical storms and hurricanes have always formed in the Atlantic and
created havoc in the Caribbean and southeast since before Europeans
explored the area. And they occur every season (June through
November). Some of them even travel up the coast and then dodge in at
full strength. This happened back in the mid 30's and the photo's of
whole sections of forests flattened in New England are still amazing
to see. What's different now is that more are forming than in recent
history, and more of the storms build into catagories 3, 4 and even 5.

No thanks; I've lived in Chandler. 115 in the shade is just too g-d
hot. Winter's nice, though.

New Orleans is currently voluntarily being evacuated. Had some flooding
from Cindy in the French Quarter area already...

Your welcome over here at 4R7... 30kw NG generator, swimming pool, 80
quart deep fryer/boiler and a BBQ pit. Fix'n to pick the white concord
grapes tomorrow...

Well, remember New Hampshire is in New England and so can
lay claim to a pro football team. A claim more legitimate than
any New York claim to the Jet and Giants, which play home games
in New Jersey. :-)

Yeah, we only get hurricanes every four years or so and the winds rarely get
much above 100 mph.
