I'm a bit surprised that no one has brought up the horrible terrorist
attacks on London.

More importantly, I'm a bit worried that we haven't heard from any of
our British pilot friends on this group, like Paul Sengupta, Steven
Atherton, Chris Blythe, John Forster, and a host of others.

You guys okay? Our thoughts are with you and your countrymen...

I figured that it wasn't an aviation event, so it really isn't on-topic for
these rec.aviation groups.

I haven't heard back from one of my UK clients. I'm trying to think good
thoughts and imagine that it is just a bit hectic right now and they'll get
back to me when they can.

Well, true enough, except when you consider the number of British pilots on
this group -- all of whom have fallen strangely silent.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they're okay...and that they've got more
important things to do right now than surf the aviation newsgroups.

My brother flew to London on the 7th. We haven't heard from him either. As in
your situation, we hope he's just too busy to call.

This is the same brother who used to work at the WTC and kept us worried all day
on 9/11. It just never occurred to him that he should call anyone to say he was
ok, and I'm sure it's the same thing now. Sort of hard on my mother, though.

George,

Follow this link to the BBC website. The arcticle has the number of the
Scotland Yard Casualty hotline. Now that I think of it, what with dialing
codes and whatnot, just dial 011-44-870-156-6344. They may be able to tell
you something about your brother (but hopefully not, if you know what I
mean). Do you know which airport he came into and where in London he was
going? If I know those two things I might be able to tell you if he was
likely to be in that part of town or not. All the blasts happened within
the northern central part of town so if, for instance, he was coming in to
Heathrow and going to someplace near Victoria, he wouldn't have been on any
of the lines concerned.

I hope you hear from him soon.

Jay,

I don't think I was one of the ones you were talking about but I can give
you some idea of what's going on around the city. I'm now officially a Brit
(got citizenship on 8 Jun, oddly enough, the 15th anniversary of my
commissioning as an officer in the USAF) and live in Twickenham, which is
about 10 miles west of the center of the city and still within the greater
metropolitan area.

There still seem to be a lot of people missing as the hospitals are still
treating quite a lot who may have not yet been identified and some of the
tube trains are still in situ with bodies on them. I can't imagine what
that recovery job is like. I think the death toll stands at around 50 right
now (Sunday morning), but that may rise as injured succumb to wounds. I
also think they had some real trouble identifiying what went on and who was
killed in the bus explosion. It seems like that explosion was pretty big
and complicated in terms of identification. On Saturday they confirmed that
they thought 13 had been killed on the bus.

I don't know any of the pilots you mentioned so, unfortunately, I can't give
any reassurance on any of them.

London has pretty much just picked itself up and gotten on with it.
Theaters and everything else were open again the next day. Obviously the
effected Tube lines will be closed for some time but those outside that
immediate area of geography or movement patterns seem to have returned to
normal. It's a bit eerie in one sense, but also immensely heartening to see
that the terrorist had so little wide-reaching effect on the people and that
fact that life goes on and they will not let this slow them down.

I hope the ones you were concerned about come up on freq soon. If you're
really concerned and think they might have been involved you can call the
Scotland Yard casualty hotline at 011-44-870-156-6344 and they might be able
to tell you something. Latest news is on:

Jay,

Thought you might be interested in one response from a British friend:
http://www.lnreview.co.uk/news/005167.php

Seems the British have a certain disdain for those with little minds
who feel that murdering innocents is appropriate behavior. I find
myself agreeing with the writer.

BTW, you going to be parking in your usual location at OSH? I'll be in
the same row as the last several years. Hope to see you.

Warmest regards,

Life Goes On http://www.trendmacro.com/a/luskin/20050711luskinSMC.asp

"London knows as well as any city in the world what it's like to live with
the threat of terror. From 1981 to 1996, the Irish Republican Army carried
out a series of bombings in public places in London ranging from small pubs
to huge office buildings. Separately, government officials were murdered,
kidnapped and beaten.

I remember doing business in London during those years. I remember the
police checkpoints along the roads leading into The City London's
equivalent of Wall Street where cars were routinely searched for
explosives. It slowed things down, but life went on."

Salute to them all!

Same here. If you've figured out how to reserve a specific campsite in
the North 40, please be sure to let me know how it's done!

Each year we've been parked in wildly different locations, even though
we always try to arrive the day before the convention begins. Last
year was the ultimate spot -- right next to the clear zone at the end
of Rwy 27 -- and I'd give almost anything to get it again!

You gonna be around for the rec.aviation party at our campsite on
Wednesday night? It should be a great chance to put some faces with
some names -- last year we had around 40 people show up for food and
drink!

A lot of us just get on with it. The link is to a photo taken at about
16.15Z. Today is National Commemoration Day celebrating 60 years since the
end of WW2.

There are a few hundred thousand people who packed the Mall for a flypast by
WW2 planes, including Catalina, DC-3s B25, B17 and of course a Spitfire,
Hurricane and a Lancaster bomber. Best sound in the world is the Merlin
engine.

All these people were not going to have the day spoilt by what happened on
Wednesday.

The terrorists win when you change what you do.

Unfortunately, he left us no itinerary. I suspect that he arrived after the
blasts. He is with a group touring famous church organs in the British Isles.
We're pretty sure that someone in the group would've contacted family if there
were a problem. Personally, I'm not worried, but it's a bit harder on my mother.

US Military commanders have banned their personnel from visiting London.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4673987.stm

Details of the travel ban, enforced on Friday, emerged as US President
George W Bush said the US would "not retreat in the face of terrorists" .

He said: "In this difficult hour, the people of Great Britain can know the
American people stand with you."

Oh well

You might also consider the source.

To say Britain *invited* this is pretty much the same as saying that the USA
invited 9-11.

To Faux News, every democratic state in the world, ...who does not throw its
citizens into jail on mere suspicion but who actually follows rules of
law.... is "harbouring terrorists and inviting disaster".

Faux caters to those who want to live in its own little walled community
with the machine guns bristling outward at all others, ... and perhaps even
inward at their own, just to keep them in line.

Simplistic, oppressive, and not necessarily any safer.

Doomsday cults live like something like that.

Ok Matt, I've considered it. My statement stands. Nobody "invited" anything.
Keep in mind that the Brits have far more experience with terrorism than we
have. I've seen the videos, and I didn't see the panic our leaders showed
when a training aircraft almost flew over them.

condemnation of Islam,
except as a national policy, as evidenced by the millions who do. A
terrorist is a criminal, here, there, and in every religion. They can wave
whatever banner they like, but it does not change the fact that they are
criminals. When faced with a rattlesnake, you don't have to understand his
motivation. You simply kill it. Kazinski & McVey were definately terrorists,
and most definately not Muslim.
We recently had a local lawyer arrested for the Madrid bombings on half
a fingerprint and a muslim background. Seems he once represented someone who
knew someone who...ect. You too fit into someone's group.

Non-sequitur.

Non-sequitur.

(One gets dizzy listening to people talk in disjointed circles).

They DO stand beside the people of Great Britian - just not within the M25!
:-)

Ban lifted on Tuesday.

At Oshkosh a couple years ago, they had (I think) 17 P-51's lined up side by
side, and they all fired them up, all at once! WoW !!!!

And the ban was requested by the Brits, not by the US.

Gathering of Mustangs and Legends
"The Final Round Up"
June 8-11th, 2006 Stead Field, Nevada

"In 1999 an unprecedented gathering of 65 P-51 Mustangs and 12 Mustang Aces
took place at Stallion 51 in Kissimmee, Florida. It was considered to be a
Once in a Lifetime event. The once in a lifetime event is about to happen
again in 2006! The Gathering of Mustangs and Legends: "The Final Round Up"
plans not only to repeat the grandeur of the last event but to exceed it
with a proposed 100 Mustangs in attendance and a 51 Plane Mustang Formation
along with countless Mustang pilots and aces from WWII and Korea. (click
here for more information)"

I would'n mind finding myself in Reno, Nevada next June.

Not true from all the reports I've read and would contradict everything else
the leaders in London have been telling the population (go back to work,
return to your normal life, etc)

Do you have any factual source for that claim? It contradicts all news
reports I've seen, in which the US military said it issued the ban for the
safety of US troops (with no mention of any request from Britain), and
British authorities (including Tony Blair) said they'd pressed the US to
*end* the ban.

They asked (demanded?) the _Americans_ to stay out of town. Another British
offical then recinded the demand/request.

I posted the link to the report the other day.

Where? The only link I saw from you in this thread addressing the matter is:
http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-13385130,00.html
and that link says nothing about any British request for Americans to stay
out of town.
