View Full Version : Going to OSH? You're invited!

You're invited!

What: 3rd Annual Pre-Oshkosh Fly-In Pool Party
Where: Alexis Park Inn & Suites, Iowa City, Iowa -- on the north side of
Rwy 25 at Iowa City Municipal (KIOW).
When: Saturday, July 23rd, noon till ???
Why: Our way of saying "Thanks!" for another great year at our aviation
theme-suites hotel.

FREE food, beverages (adult and otherwise) and music will be served at
poolside. We will do two "shifts" of meals, one for lunch, and one for the
dinnertime crowd -- although there will be all sorts of things to munch on
throughout the day.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I stay the night at the hotel? Unfortunately we are sold out, but we
will find other accommodations for you, as needed. (I've got a guest room
in my home we can press into service, if necessary!)
Can I camp on the hotel grounds? Sure! We've got showers and bathrooms
accessible to you.
Can I camp on the airport? You bet! I've spoken with the owner of the
Eastern Iowa Pilots Association, which occupies our incredibly historic
Boeing/United Hangar (built in 1930, it's one of just 7 original airmail
hangars left), and she will allow tents to be set up alongside the hangar,
and the bathroom will be accessible 24/7.
What's there to do in Iowa City? We're a Big Ten college town, and the
Amana Colonies are nearby. There are 55 restaurants within a mile of the
Inn, and campus/downtown are less than a mile away. There is always
something happening here on a summer weekend!
How do I get to the Inn from the airport? We're about 400 yards from the
airport -- an easy walk, without luggage. If you've got luggage/gear, have
the FBO call us, and we'll give you a lift in the hotel van.
What if I can't swim? Jim Weir and Jack Allison are trained in CPR and
water rescue techniques. You will be safer than in the arms of
you-know-who... :-)

Hope to meet some of you guys on the way to the Big One!

(And don't forget our big North 40 party on Wednesday night at our
campsite!)

If you are going to Oshkosh, you may want to consider a stop at our
little small town airport.
3LF http://www.litchfieldil.com/airport/
take a look at the photography, the young eagle links, the pilot info
and then.......... stop over here for a night.

Gas is guaranteed at $2.85 a gallon (self service, like at the car gas
stations). We have a courtesy car ( old chevy, not pretty. but runs
good) No, the gas price is not very good, but it is the best we can do
and it will be this price on return trip also. We are about 340 or 350
miles straight south of Oshkosh..

On field camping, and motels within 1 mile walk. restarants, bars, Free
overnighting and Admin. bulding will be
Kept open for rest rooms and what ever. Sleep in there if you want......
Broadband Internet.

Pass this information around to the other lists if you dont mind.

Bring your tie downs and ropes that you will need in Oshkosh just in
case we would have more than eight planes here. There is plenty of grass
for yie downs.......

Also Chapter 61, Acro contest will be going on that weekend at Salem
Illinois.(about 45 miles southeast) Feel free to stop in there for some
great competition and partying....

Phil RV6 flown and tore down now for painting............
Sure wish I had a Pitt's to Fly..........

What's that large white fan-shaped thing down by what looks like the High
School. It's the size of the High School grounds. Roman amphitheater?

My good heavens!! Do they still have those things operational anywhere? If
not torn up for a strip mall, most of them have been converted to swap
meets.

North Las Vegas airport has a multiscreen jobbie right next to it. Kinda
have to drive around it geauxing from the new big hangers back to the
FBO and restaurant...

Wimberly, Texas had a Sit-in where you bring your own lawn chairs, dunno
if its still open or not though...

Note to Jim: Next time, point the car *at* the big white shiny board when you
park.

Yep, it still is. Lot of people here in town went to that drive in with
their dad and came home with their mother.... That is "historic" route
66 in front of it and the newer route 66 beyond that..... The High
School is across the RR tracks from it and down a couple blocks.

We've bought a lot of real estate around it which is being farmed now. I
think it will be good for fifty years. That is not really too far out in
the future. There is plenty of space for housing to build on other sides
of town which they seem to be doing. There is not really much growth
here, it is a farm town. Corn fields in all directions....
The town was 7000 population in 1900 and today it is a whopping 6900.
In reality, it is probably about 12000 because many people have move 1/2
mile or so to the edges of town, Most of the industry has left and went
to Mexico and China. It is a bedroom community for STL (50 mi) and
Springfield (40 mi). We had a Roller Derby Skate plant here that
employed 600, an International Paper plant that employed 300, Coca Cola
Bottling that employed 40, Pepsi Cola that employed 15 or 20, A
condensed milk plant that employed 50 , they are all gone now. We have
an Echlin plant that has about 2 or 3 hundred, soon to leave and go to
Mexico. We do have a company that makes farm tractor attachments. They
seem to be growing.
The real estate around the airport is reserved for business ventures, if
anyone ever becomes interested. Actually there is a lot of it and it
would be a great place for aviation related business's, do to our
location. Wick's is 31 miles straight south through the country roads.
A.E.R.O. is about 35 miles down the interstate. A Garrett center is at
Springfield. Central Airparts has an operation on the field called
Central Air Service.Their junk yard is about 15 miles away. And by the
way, any one coming through here to Oshkosh and needing some used parts,
could have Bob at Central Air Parts, get them to be waiting on the way
back home...
Hangars rent here for $58 (the old ones chain lift doors ) $75 (the
newer ones concrete floors and 40' electric doors) and soon to be ten
new ones for $100 Concrete floors and 42' electric doors....... Right
now there is a waiting list but the ten new hangars should reduce this
down to almost nothing. If not we will build ten more.

Ouch! Where's that?

Here in NC, gas has been going for $2.21, for 87 Octane.

I hope we don't have to pay $2.85 on the way to Oz, in a couple weeks!
