Sony Air-8 audio problem

Hi,

I've just gotten a used Sony Air-8 scanner and it has a problem with
the audio. Over the speaker or over headphones audio is very low,
barely audible, and the volume control does not affect it at all. It
sounds like this is a common problem and was wondering if anyone knows
what the deal is or how to fix it.
