This, too, shall pass. Best way to help speed that passage is not to
reply to "those" posts.

Yes I do remember..As for the Sea Control ship loaded with F-35's and
Osprey..Forget it..The CVN will continue as the lead ship of the Navy.
Last week the Navy cut the steel for the as yet unnamed CVN-78. Majoor
construction will start in 2 years.

HELL, I remember when the SB2U-1 was the pride of the Ranger Air Group, the Colorado had the 1st OS2U-1 and the Flying Chiefs (VF-2) had F2A-2's on the Lexington.

Tell us more. Especially about VF-2. (Were you a part of this outfit? If so,
when?)

Nope,
but in the early-1940's they and VF-5 with F3F-3's were deployed on the
Yorktown.

VF-5, and it's F3Fs, wasn't aboard for long after Yorktown rejoined the
Atlantic Fleet. They were replaced on 23 May 1941 with VF-41 which, in
turn, was replaced, on 14 June, by VF-42; both operated F4F-3's. VF-42
stayed with Yorktown through Coral Sea and then made up the majority of
the pilots in VF-3 at Midway.

1941 was a time of changes for the Atlantic carriers, biplanes were
going away and newer types coming in. Some squadrons were changed
completely; VF-42, up until February 1941 was VS-41 aboard Ranger
operating SBUs. Then one day "poof, you guys are now fighter pilots"
and they were off to Chambers Field to start checking out in F4Fs.

I am hoping for CVN78 to be named after USS America - recently sunk off east
coast.

I'm still holding out for LANGLEY (CV-1, CVL-27), LEXINGTON (CV-2, CV-16) or
UNITED STATES (CV-58).

I thought the SBDs were replacing the Vindicators by then, but it
sounds like you were there, and I surely wasn't!

Believe it ot not, the Gyrenes got the 1st operational SBD's in late 1940,
VMB-2, then VMB-1 in early 1941.
The Enterprise received the 1st SBD-2s, (VB-6) at the end of 1942, as well
as VB-2 on the Lexington. The Ranger got received SBD-3s (VS-41) in November
1942.

Actually, the *first* USS United States was a pretty successful ship,
including winning a rather well-known single-ship duel with HMS
Macedonian back in the War of 1812. Of course, she did come to a sad
end (as CSS United States, believe it or not).
