Well, I have done it now. Sent of me hard earned for a set of Bearhawk
plans.
I haven't built an aeroplane before let alone scratch building from plans,
hopefully an enjoyable learning curve over the next several years.......
Any other Bearhawk builders in the group?

Most of the Bearhawkers hang out on . That list
is unmoderated. Bearhawkers@yahoogroups is moderated, but much, much
lower traffice. There are also resources, such as a wing building manual
(others coming), and a construction CD, avaible from members of these
groups.

Bearhawk's a nice looking plane but man it doesn't look like an easy
build...particularly for a first timer...I'd suggest you get right up
close and friendly with your local EAA chapter...

To bad it doesn't fall into the light sport category , it is a sweet looking
plane . Just take your time and most definitely ASK questions from people
that have more experience. You may even get lucky and find a few that would
be willing to come over and help you some. Mostly will depend on the kind of
EAA chapter you have locally.
Congrads on getting your plans, and by all means let us know how things
are coming along!

The designer of the Bearhawk, Bob Barows designed a tandem (2 place)
version of the bearhawk called the patrol. Still not sport pilot, but he
is working on a sport pilot version of the patrol, for 65-100hp. Expects
to be finished in about a year.
What surprises me is that nobody has plans for a side by side at sport
pilot gross. There are a number of nice planes out there, such as the
Highlander, but no plans builts!

I agree the Highlander is a nice plane as well, but I can't afford to go the
kit route. I'll look forward to the Bearhawk sport plane and even Van's
RV-12 I think it will be called. I like the Zenith 701 as well but heard
"not to good" reviews when you don't use the overpriced Rotax 912 in them.

Might not quite fit Sport Pilot, though. :))
Query -Why on Earth would you want to carry a bunch of metal around that can
corrode and/or fatigue?

For it better tolerates a sit out in the sun... If it has to...

To take it a step further...
Are there any homebuilts that match the performance of a luscombe 8a with a
continental A-65 that uses the same engine?
I am not sure I know of any (2 seat continental A-65 powered, 95 MPH+
cruise)

Sorry Rich, those don't qualify...I'm talking high wingers here, with a
design gross of 1320# (Yes, I know one can put any gross weight they
want on a homebuilt, but I'd rather have a design that way).
The 701 is a nice plane, and builds quickly...but they are slow. I was
going to build one of these when I discovered the Bearhawk.

Well, the high wing spec certainly disqualifies any of those. There are
several under the design gross of 1320# such as the Junior IV @ 950#, the
Champion V @ 993#, the Emeraude @ 1145# (aerobatic gross) and the Whiskey IV
@ 1058#. Even the Beryl at its design aerobatic gross of 1400# isn't that
far off.

Darrel..........
There are some excellent pictures of retractable CP 1320 Saphirs at
http://www.avions-piel.com/ftopic69.html
and one of a retractable red & white Super Diamant with a Mooney-style
fastback at
http://www.avions-piel.com/galerie/thumbnails.php?album=25.
The prettiest airborne picture I have EVER seen of an Emeraude is at
http://www.avions-piel.com/galerie/displayimage.php?album=27&pos=0.
