View Full Version : ADF static? question

My friend has an ADF in his C-180 with the type of antenna that goes from the
windshield to the tail.
Says it works fine on the ground during taxi and runup but gets nothing but
static (over the phones and needle won't "track") about 3 to 5 minutes into
flight. Happens every time. There are no static wicks.
Any experience here? Could static buildup be that reliable regardless of the
weather? Any recommendations?

I had the same problem in my Bonanze. Replaced the ADF with a CD player
and had no more static from the ADF.

Hi Jim,
Remembering back to when I did my instrument rating, ADF's are particularly
suseptable to both precipitation static and mountain effect caused by
attenuation and spurious bouncing of signals due to high terrain.
With the exception of adding static wicks to the trailing edges, aot alot
else could be done about them IIRC except to tune into a higher frequency
signal or to fly alot higher than the terrain and attemp a line of sight
fix.
