View Full Version : FlightAware web site -- finally free flight tracking

Finally, there's a free web site that does tracking of IFR flights and
maps and graphs and whatnot:

http://flightaware.com/

For IFR folks, you can enter airports that you're flying between and
get a list of IFR routes that people have flown, which makes flight
planning a lot easier.

I haven't had a chance to peruse your entire web site yet, but this is
fascinating: http://flightaware.com/analysis/allflights_movie.rvt . I
wonder why there is virtually no traffic in Mexico depicted?

Thanks for your effort and creativity in making what appears to be an
eminently useful and professionally attractive web site.

Maybe because aircraft below 18,000 almost never get to talk to center
or approach?

This website looks awesome. I've been looking for something like this
since before I even started flying.

You're referring to flight operations conducted in Mexico I presume.
That hasn't been my experience.

Additionally, I wonder what the stationary bands of blinking lights at
regular intervals between Californian & Hawaii and in the eastern
Atlantic represent. Would those be ATC intersections?

Great site, how about a bigger map when you view one airport or one
particular aircraft?

Pretty slick! I typed in my tail ID to see if my IFR flight from earlier
today could be displayed and there it was!

OK, I then registered and pulled up my IFR flight history from the last 90
days. Incredible! However, it seems a few of my recent IFR flights,
including one this past Tuesday, were missing.

Disregard this as I just realized the cause: The missing flights are
actually under a different (legitimate) callsign.

Very cool.

This is very cool. One thing though. You need to change the 24 loop movie
for a period other than Sunday Monday. Your missing out on the great FedEx
migration at MEM.

It is so damn cool we crashed it.

FlightAware is currently unavailable. Please try back later. (DB1)

Yes, I noticed that. It is in beta, hopefully when it goes production
it will have more bulletproof servers.

I don't believe its possible NOT to talk to center in Mexico.

Wow, cool. It says all the data is publicly available. Any idea where
the site pulls the data from?

FAA website has all the IFR flight plan information archived.

A great site!
I wrestled with the time zone a little before discovering the GMT =
choice.

Chip Hermes

I think it's just United States traffic although I have seen some other
international stuff.

Thanks for the kudos although I can't accept them; I was invited into
the beta originally and wanted to let others know that it had gone
public.

How about making the loop movie time period user selectable?

i passed your idea on and just noticed that the site is updated with a
new one from a Wednesday and if you keep your eyes peeled, you can see
the MEM activity in the middle of the night.
