You are correct that you want AA cells, not a rechargable.
I owned a Sporty's but didn't like it, the buttons especially. I
eBayed it and got a Vertex (then Yaseu). However, my handheld is my
primary radio, and the AA power of the Sporty's was a real problem. It
just ate batteries. Also, I had no need for the nav feature.
If I were buying now, I would buy the somewhat larger and more
expensive Icom.

if you are looking at "occasional emergency use", AA batteries are best for
"storage"
if you are looking at weekly use (I use mine every weekend for flying in
gliders with no built in radio, plus for ground operations to monitor
students flying solo), then rechargeable is the answer, NiMH is great.
My ICOM A-22 has a NiMH 1500mA Hr rating and works fine for Sat/Sunday on a
Friday night charge.

And you can find 2300 mAh or 2500s now at Walmart.

yes... but are they built in the case for the ICOM?
or are you talking about AA Rechargables... not sure how long they will last
and you need at least 10 for my ICOM battery box

For use a backup, it is better to have alkaline batteries, since all
rechargeables self discharge.
