View Full Version : ABC News - Flying is a US Freedom

October 28th 05, 12:19 AM
Anyone else see the online commentary by John Nance that it is a
freedom to be able to fly a plane?

"While descriptions of the freedom of flight seem more attuned to
the roaring '20s and the age of barnstormers and daredevil airmail
pilots, what we had in those more innocent days we still have — in
spades.

America, in aviation terms, is truly a unique land of endless
opportunity. While most nations in the free world allow some
private flying, many countries make it a difficult freedom to
exercise, weeding out all but a few would-be private pilots with
high costs and higher taxes, a scarcity of airports, and an
abundance of oppressive rules and regulations about where a mere
individual pilot can go.

Flying for the pure joy of it, in other words, tends to be
primarily the province of North Americans (with Australia being a
close second)

[...]

That's a freedom we mustn't take for granted."

Nance needs to deliver that message on the floor of Congress.

I guess those of us outside the USA aren't enjoying a US freedom?

Looks like a pretty good article although a bit narrow. Many countries other
than the US etc., are able to manage a flying population. So he is a bit
short there. Otherwise not to shabby.
I also think he should make the pitch to Congress.....
Even better. we as pilots should start voting out some of the deadbeats in
Congress!!

New York and California are the only two I know about. :-)

Well, Mr. Nance is proselytizing in the U.S. Other countries should
have aviation "evangelists" of their own.

Ah yes, more geographic chauvinism, from the country that most seeks to
exert it's influence beyond its border.

Happy landings,

Agreed. In a globalized world we must resist a narrow or parochial word
view. What we can't see or understand does affect us.

Happy landings,

Not to mention a seat in the U.N., spending US money.

Actually, I believe communications mogul Ted Turner pledged $1 billion
toward paying the US arrearage to the UN.

Heh. I'd forgotten that.

Yes, indeed.

The UN does indeed run largely on the generosity of American
taxpayers, paying about a quarter of its overall expenses. See
http://usinfo.state.gov/is/Archive/2004/Sep/15-489155.html

The United States is the largest financial contributor to the U.N.,
and has been every year since its creation in 1945. U.S. contributions
to the U.N. system in 2003 were well over $3 billion. In-kind
contributions include items such as food donations for the World Food
Program.

The U.S.-assessed contribution to the U.N. regular budget in 2003 was
$341 million, and to U.N. specialized agencies was over $400 million.
The United States also contributed $686 million in assessments to the
peacekeeping budget; $57 million for the support of the international
war crimes tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia; and, $6
million for preparatory work relating to the Capital Master Plan to
renovate the U.N. Headquarters in New York. Moreover, each year the
United States provides a significant amount in voluntary contributions
to the U.N. and its affiliated agencies and activities, largely for
humanitarian and development programs.

a nation not beeing part of the international court should be very quiet,
shut up or take responsibility.

*wow* ... a nation with more than 200 million people doing so. *clap-clap*
.... we are 8 million people and we do the same here in Vienna. *bah* and we
don't make much ado about it. we simply do it.
