View Full Version : IFR ADIZ Flying ?

I've read alot of the issues with flying through/in the Washington DC ADIZ.

Are most of these issues due to folks trying to fly VFR through this
airspace or are just as many people having these issues under an IFR flight
plan?

I was planning on flying up to BWI in a couple of weeks, it will be my first
flight into the ADIZ since 9/11. I'm currently reading everything I can
find on it and I plan to file IFR.

Are folks on IFR flight plans seeing the same delays that folks on VFR ADIZ
flight plans experiencing ?

Thanks.

My only one time experience involved flying through the ADIZ, which would
have taken me directly over Dulles and Reagan, on my way to the Eastern
Shore of Maryland.

Instead, I got re-routed over BWI, and then direct to the destination , with
quite a few altitude and heading changes along the way. (all solid IMC, in
and out of rain showers, turbulence, etc) It doesn't sound like going to BWI
should be too bad as long as you pay attention to the radio calls.

I have several IFR flights through the ADIZ over the last few years in both
a C172 and a Bonanza and in my opinion I did not experience any delays or
reroutes due specifically to the ADIZ. Reroutes around the three DC
commercial airports' arrival and departure corridors? Those were very
common.

Not here. I've flown IFR in and out from the south to Annapolis and
Kentmorr several times.

You just have the read the rules, check them twice, and remember there
is no allowance for deviation on anything.

I did create a little trouble on one flight when I was VFR - it's much
more straight forward to do it IFR.

I live/fly in the Adiz and if you fly IFR you should not see a big
difference being in the ADIZ. If you can live with the possible
re-routing and other IFR stuff then it's the best way to come into the
ADIZ.

I fly into, out of and around the ADIZ and FRZ five days a week. File
IFR and do not worry about it. IFR takes care of the file, squawk, talk
requirements.

I've flown IFR in and out of BWI, GAI, and W00 since the ADIZ
inception.

Getting in is normal IFR...

Getting out at BWI and GAI is pretty much SOP if everything is filed in
advance. Since I'm based in NY, filing in advance was not a big deal
(ie: Little or no hold times, etc.). And I think the one time that I
handn't filed in advance, I used my cell phone and filed through NY
anyway...

At W00, there was no Clearance Departure frequency, so I had to get
clearance over the phone. There was a line for the phone, and there was
a wait for an answer - maybe 5 or 10 minutes. By the time my turn came
around, we had people telling the guy to hold on for the next person in
line so that they didn't have to wait again... All in all, it wasn't
completely outrageous, but definitely not convenient.

Again, because BWI and GAI have clearance departure frequencies, it was
pretty much a non-issue... Call up on clearance, and get your CRAFT and
go...

The only significant difference about flying IFR in the ADIZ is that
you can not:

A) Pick up your IFR clearance in the air, after launching without
talking to ATC at all.

B) Squawk 1200 after cancelling IFR if you have your destination in
sight.

Besides that, it's pretty much the same as any IFR flight.

Flew in/out of the ADIZ this week for the first time. Filed IFR both ways
and was impressed on how much of a non-event it was. I don't think ATC ever
even mentioned it on the radio. It was like any other IFR flight I've ever
had. Amazing how easy it is when you follow the rules.

I do feel the pain of VFR folks though.
