View Full Version : Pilot walks away from crash near Manchester, NH airport

November 8th 05, 04:08 PM
Turned on the TV this morning and caught breaking news of Embraer 100
crash near (1 mile north) of KMHT. The pilot walked out of the
wreckage moments before it exploded. Local news reported that the plane
took off and immediately requested an emergency landing. Witnesses
report one engine was out. One fellow (claiming some knowledge about
aircraft) said he noted that one prop was not spinning, and he said it
sounded like he was full throttle at that point. He also said the
plane was one wing low on a 45 degree angle. The plane crashed at
7:20am, five minutes after declaring the emergency.

Winds were reported calm at the time, but were NW yesterday and are NW
now. I'm guessing (?) he took off from RWY 35, and was attempting to
return to RWY 17. One witness hypothesized that the pilot may have
attempted to set down in the Walmart parking lot where he crashed.

If it had to hit a store, I'm glad it was Wal-Mart.

Me too!

Did you notice it was the second crash in NH involving this same freight
carrier this year? The guy that got killed in January was operating IFR
in really soupy conditions and ran into a mountain a little north of this
incident. Weird.

Great. More good press for GA.

I'm not familiar with the Emb-100 although I did fly the 110 20 years
ago. At 13007 lbs it was a two pilot aircraft under 135 with no
autopilot due to autotrim runaways in earlier years. Grossly
underpowered at 750 shp per side, you needed to pitch down
to the blue line during v-1 cuts looking at the treetops, and this
was during training weights.

To be shrugged off as "Yep, a plane crashed into a store. Certainly
something to be avoided, but not necessarily a catastrophic situation."

Heck, half of all pilots shop at Walmart. In fact, half of
America shops at Walmart.

Is this GA, or Far Part 135? AirNow used to be named Business Air. We
flew a bunch of UPS contracts for them in the 80's after they trashed
a couple of airplanes. "Robin Ou****er is a nice looking milf" says
Jim Hill in another interview, at the bar.

No, congress will expand the H-1B program to allow highly trained foreign
workers to be bought into this country for the WalMart jobs, since the CEO
will complain there are not enough American workers for the jobs.

Out of curiosity, do you not consider Part135 to be GA?

I know the AirNow operation. Nice folks.
Before the Embraers, Business Air used to operate a couple of DC-3's out
of DDH.

Absolutely! What right do those poor people have to buy mittens for

My checkbook was stolen in December. I immediately closed the account.
Wal-Mart accepted a check for $500 a month later and went after me when it
bounced. I said I would fax them a copy of the police report. They said that
I *MUST* send them a notorized affidavit from my bank or they would turn it
over for prosecution.

Let the kids buy their mittens at Target. They were polite.

Did someone try to pass one of your checks at Target as well?

Criminal!

How could anyone be so dastardly as to try to collect on a bounced
check?

All the Wally-Marts around here run your check through as an electronic
debit, it would not have been accepted at all on a closed account.

A *decent* banking system prevents this from happening to the customer
at all. Checks - which really are deprecated these days - (for some reason,
spelled 'cheques' here) must be covered by a 'cheque guarantee card' here.

If not, the retailer probably won't accept them.

A cheque guarantee card basically guarantees the bank will pay the
retailer no matter what - so the retailer isn't on the hook to chase bad
cheques. If it's stolen (rather than just the customer didn't have the
money), it becomes the bank's problem. However, these days, with
electronic checks, that's unlikely to actually happen. In any case, no
one seriously uses cheques here any more for store payments. They are
only kept because they are convenient for settling payments with other
individuals or small traders - and the cheque guarantee card protects
them, too. For everything else, I don't know anyone who doesn't use a
debit or credit card.

Yup. Got a similar call from Target. I faxed them a copy of the police
report, and they thanked me for helping them.

The guy had a license made up with my name and address, with his picture.

I've got no problem with them trying to collect. I have a problem with their
rude behavior and threats. The check was not returned for insufficient funds
(NSF) it was returned because the account was closed.

I politely explained that the checkbook had been stolen, and that I had
closed the account. They told me that if I didn't provide a notorized
affidavit from the bank, they would press charges.

It's not my fault they accepted a stolen check. If they had bothered
checking, they would have found the account was closed before giving the
thief the merchandise. That's simply a risk they take when they accept
checks.

I'm not taking time off from work to go get paperwork from a bank because
they say so.

BTW, my wife is in court today testifying.

PIN numbers for EVERYTHING. Won't stop crime but it will take a bite out of
it. Your PIN number, even if it was the correct one, would have come back
"account closed".

All checks, debit cards, credit cards ...PIN numbers.

Sophisticated theft will still occur, but crimes of opportunity (look, a
wallet) will be less profitable.

I don't think I'd be covered because I initiated the phone call. When they
first called and I said the checkbook had been stolen they told me to call
888-799-3059. I called them, ready to provide the name of the detective
handling the case, and whatever else I could think of. The notes I took
state: "Per Pearl on 1-27-05 failure to provide affividavid and police
report may result in prosecution"

I called the detective handling the case. He called the Reading police
(where the store was that took the stolen check). The Reading police had no
report on file from Wal-Mart. the detective called back and told me not to
worry about it.

The best part is that yesterday, my wife was summoned in the case (it was
her handbag that had been stolen). Wal-Mart wasn't there. They never
reported it, so they were not notified that an arrest had been made. The guy
got 2 1/2 years, concurrent with other time for escaping custody. They told
my wife she could pursue the stolen cash, but it wasn't that much cash, and
would have involved multiple court appearances.

I did send them a note on their website letting them know that an arrest had
been made, and I was still waiting for my apology. They responded with an
automated response that they could not assist me.

Their loss. they are out several thousand dollars, between all their
locations with checks and credit cards.
