View Full Version : Idaho Exposed - Bush Flying Video

November 9th 05, 10:36 PM
Fun video to watch now that it's getting cold outside, especially since
most of the video was filmed on 80 degree summer days.

About the video, "Idaho Exposed"...

"Literally filmed from the right seat of a Cessna 185 Skywagon by
Videographer Kevin Griffin, Idaho Exposed takes place in the
backcountry of the great U.S. state of Idaho. Herb Millhorn, 50+ year
Idaho resident and veteran bush pilot takes us on a tour of some of the
most beautiful country in the world, located in the Frank Church River
of No Return Wilderness Area, and the secret gems that it beholds.

Witness amazing flying skills as Herb lands his Cessna 185 Skywagon on
risky airstrips that would make other pilots cringe. Canyons and
mountain tops are the settings for this spectacular demonstration of
phenomenal pilot skills.
Don't miss Idaho Exposed as we get to witness culture and
recreational opportunities that only exist in this remote area of
Central Idaho - including World Class fishing & hunting, river
rafting and horseback riding.
Take off from Herb's private airstrip in his backyard and fly along
with Idaho Exposed as we visit the following airstrips on the Main &
Middle Forks of the Salmon River; Big Creek, Dixie Town, Soldier Bar,
Flying 'B'
Ranch, Lower Loon Creek, Sulphur Creek, Johnson Creek, Vines Ranch,
Cabin Creek, Wilson Bar, Dewey Moore and the legendary "Mile
Hi"."

Click on the products page at http://www.griffinstudios.tv for samples
from the video and ordering instructions. Right now it's NTSC only,
but I'm working on the PAL version.

Enjoy!

I flew with a friend up in that area back in August. We went to Sulphur
Creek, Upper and Lower Loon. The scenery is *breathtaking* and video
does not do it justice.

We went when the weather was absolutely perfect (we went during the
morning before the heat could build up, and there was no wind). I
wouldn't really want to try and fly into Lower Loon if there was even a
few knots of wind - the surrounding terrain could make for "exciting"
approaches and departures. We made Lower Loon our last strip too,
because by then we'd be lightest on fuel. It is *not* very long. The
Cessna 180 handled it fine though.

We shot some video, too. PAL - NSTC - we don't care; we used MPEG-4!
http://www.alioth.net/Video/BackCountry.mp4 (plays fine in VLC -
http://www.videolan.org, or QuickTime. No idea about WMP and its
non-standard codecs).

We stopped off at an airfield about 10 minutes flying from Lower Loon
(forget its name) and we were talking to the owner of the FBO. He said
that people wrecking planes on Mile Hi was a reasonably common event. He
said the common fault were people approaching too slow - the field has
significant upslope, so when they flare, they just pile into the upslope
and collapse the gear. I think I may just leave that airfield to others
:-)

I deposit them in http://www.alioth.net/Video . There aren't many in
there yet, but this is where I stick things I want to share with friends
etc.

I recently bought a wide-angle bullet camera. (The HatCam.mp4 video in
that directory was its first outing). When we get a break in the
weather, my next project is to make a short video (around 5 minutes) on
the art of ... winch launching gliders.

(I also have some sidecar racing video I need to edit down too, but not
much yet - the vibration environment was so harsh it took me a few goes
to get all the electricals stable. It actually shook the batteries out
their holder - even though I'd put duct tape around the holder to
prevent that from happening! Fortunately, the digital tape recorder is
pretty robust).
