View Full Version : So where you flying for Turkey Day?

Jay Honeck
November 20th 05, 03:45 AM
We're supposedly heading for Lansing, MI, so spend a few days with my
sister. Given the wonderful weather on the lee-side of Lake Michigan at
this time of year, our fall-back trip is to Minneapolis, to visit Mr. and
Mrs. Montblack for a day or two.

If the weather *really* sucks, we'll hole up in the house and eat turkey
till we pop.

Anyone going anywhere cool?

Jay,

I sure hope that Larry Diarrhea doesn't jump all over you like he did me a
year ago when I ask where people were going for New Years (I think it was
New Years).

BTW, we are staying here in town to eat with the in-laws... Lot's of good
food there, but I have to work the night before and Thanksgiving night
anyways, so it will be cut short.

Tuesday DEN - LGA more work...well dealing with the parental units. ;-)
LGA - PIT. more work.
PIT - SFO on 12/2.

all commercially. :( It is going to suck. I still have
some status with UA so hopefully I get bumped up as I don't
have enough candies (upgrades) any more. My only joy flying
commercially is while waiting forever saying to other
pilots "Part 121 sucks" and getting a nod and big grin.

I think the cold turkey sandwich I had last night while enroute
from CIC to SQL with george flying will be more fun. A
friend/co-worker and I flew up to Chico for a Bela Fleck & Edgar
Meyer concert. He was running late dealing with traffic. We
took off and he said, "That was smooth. wow, that traffic below
us REALLY sucks." I replied, "yea, you should see the traffic
going over the Golden Gate Bridge. Fortunately we won't have
to deal with any traffic." A quick 1:15 minute flight up there.
He called on his cell phone and had a taxi waiting for us. The
guy said, "Huh, I didn't know airlines flew in this late. Why
are all the lights off in the terminal." :) Got to our seats as
the lights were going down. Perfect timing. Got in the plane
going back, had a really smooth flight back. My biggest fear
was having a mouth of turkey while ATC is vectoring me all
over the place with nothing around. Fortunately it didn't happen.

To Mom's in Houston as usual.

Last year we arrived during a rush and got wedged in amongst the
rapid-fire stream of 737s into Hobby. The Houston controllers are very
used to this--there's a lot of light GA at Hobby--and do a great job.

If it's VMC, this is some fun flying, as you get a vectored sightseeing
tour of the city on the way in. If it's IMC, expect a workout. You
will have to fly a STAR into town, followed by a bunch of vectors and
stepdowns, maybe finishing with a side-step off the approach--but, heck,
all that stuff's fun, too.

Now there's something wrong with talking about flying in a piloting forum?
*sigh*

I liken Larry to a Usenet Fox Terrier. You know, the kind of dog that grabs
onto your slippers and gives 'em a good shake once in while.

Sorta cute to watch, in all of its puffed up frenzy, but generally harmless.

Wonderful. Have a safe and happy holiday!

On a serious note:

To all you who are blithely heading off to spend time with your family over
this Thanksgiving holiday, please stop to realize that there will come a
time in your life where you would do *anything* to spend just one more
boring Turkey Day with your folks. I think of all the times that I
childishly bitched and moaned about "how awful" the holidays were, and weep
at the realization that I could have spent so much more time actually
getting to know my Mom and Dad better.

Don't waste a minute.

Going to Grandma's house.
Having got my lic earlier this year I'll be using it to fly over the traffic
to visit the the family captive on Long Island.

Time saved ? a breakeven if you count the time to the airport, preflight,
time at the other end etc.
Cost ? Alot more expensive. (passing econmics is not a requirement to fly)

Why do it ? It so much more fun. Flying over JFK, the city view, flying
down the South Shore. Just great. I also need more XC time as I'm working
on my IFR lic so why not.

Hey Dan,

Mid afternoon on Wednesday is a guestimate. I will know much more either
tomorrow or Tuesday. I will post when I know.

My wife has an eye appointment Wednesday morning and need to clear it thru
the doc whether flying will affect her eyes. "Eye pressure" problems (AKA
early stages of glaucoma) and not sure if she will get the full exam or
just a cursory check.

If there is any adverse affect, then we will come down rise and shine on
Thursday morning.

Well, I did actually make an interesting trip yesterday. I flew from my
home base Lockhart, TX (50R) to New Braunfels (BAZ), 21 NM away. At my
speeds, that's a major xcountry.
Found it with no navaids whatsoever, though I have flown in there before
years ago. I just flew a course and followed I-35 down until I (finally)
spotted the airport. Really enjoyed that...

But upon landing, there was the most heartbreaking restored '41 J3 Cub
I've ever seen flying in there. Up close, this thing looked absolutely
brand new (it was an antique Grand Champion in one of the local
competitions). It had an A-75 motor in it with electric start. That just
made the whole trip....

If I have the weather over the tnxgiving holidays, I want to do
LaGrange, TX (3T5, about 38NM) where a friend of mine has his Rans hangared.

That's one good thing about being slow - short distances are long
xcountries and sophisticated navaids aren't really needed to get around....

Jay,

Hope you can make it this way, but the wx isn't looking good. Some
years ago after several nasty experiences with ice around the Great
Lakes over the Thanksgiving holiday, I quit flying during that time.
(For 25 years, until 3 years ago, lower Michigan got freezing rain at
least one of the holiday days - Wed through Sunday). The last three
years it has been better, and I'm going to try a flight to Iowa, hoping
I can fly instead of drive.

Jay, when one lives downwind of the Great Lakes, it is essential to
have an instrument rating if you wish to travel by little airplane with
any hope of making it even close the schedule you desire (that is,
within about 3 days). Only place I've ever lived where I could keep my
rating current with the normal flying I do, there is enough actual.
However, I do keep in mind that there have been a lot of winter days
when the instrument rating didn't help, because there was too much ice.
If what we are going to get is just lake-effect snow, it's not
possible VFR, but is no big deal IFR as the tops are low and there's
seldom much ice.

Have a great trip, no matter where you go, and enjoy the time with
family and friends.

Warmest regards,
Rick

Yes, these colds are bummers. I was planning to fly my daughter from
ELM to Grove City tomorrow for a college admission interview, but I'm
got a cold and not sure I want to fly. Although, the weather is looking
like it may hold VFR all day which makes it a lot easier. I won't fly
IFR with a cold.

We tried to make it over to Hastings, south of GRR last year the week of Dec
10th. METARs kept getting worse and finally ended up with winds from the
north west off the lake 30 gusting to 40 and vis at 0/0 with heavy freezing
rain, fog, and snow. I called the airport manager and he said it was even
worse than reported! The freezing rain had covered everything with ice and
he was afraid he'd be spending the night at the airport because it was too
bad to drive. Trees and power lines down on the roads.

Agree. With lake effect below me, I usually tell GRR that I want to stay
above the approach path to GRR 35 when going into 9D9, this gives me a slam
dunk through the lake effect and I've never picked up more than a trace. I
also make sure that I've got plenty of fuel to either circumnavigate it or
fly beyond it and land at a different airport.

Good to hear.

Luckily, all of my time with my parents wasn't wasted. When we knew my Dad
was dying, we became very close, working on our family tree together, and
visiting lots of family places that I had never seen. (The old Honeck
farmstead in Wisconsin; the ranch where my parents met -- that kind of
uniquely "family" stuff...)

Best of all, I got my Dad to sit in front of a video camera and reminisce
for a few hours. It's been 12 years now, and I've never been able to watch
the film -- but someday I will -- with his grand kids.

And my Mom and I were always close.

But, still, I grieve for all those wasted years in my 20s and early 30s,
when I just couldn't be bothered with such "nonsense". What fools we are
when young! If any of you folks still have your parents, don't waste
another minute!

I was never able to take my Dad flying, but I will always relish the memory
of my Mom's first flight.

We took off in a clapped-out rental Cherokee 140, on a hot summer's day --
and the door popped open right after rotation! The wind was sucking her
hair out the door, and you could see that she was concerned, but -- after
landing and having the FBO adjust the latch so it would stay shut -- she
happily got back in that plane for a re-launch.

She arrived in her home town, Fond du Lac, WI, like the Queen of Sheba.
Many of her childhood relatives and friends met us at the airport, and she
spent the afternoon basking in the glow of admiration for her having a
"pilot son."

Me, too...!

:-)

I hope your first flight with your folks is as memorable!

You too? I took my mom and dad to visit my sister - Teterboro to
Ithaca. It was their first flight with me, and I had just gotten my
instrument rating, so I filed IFR for practice though the day was
brilliant VFR. We get into the plane, and I pull out my checklist and
her first thought is "my god, doesn't he know how to fly this thing - he
needs the instructions???". We get our clearance, taxi to the runway
and await our takeoff clearance. And wait. And wait. Half an hour
later with the motor cranking the hobbs I finally shut the engine down -
might as well not pay for waiting for a line of jets to land all day.
Right then the tower says that if we're ready we are cleared for
immediate takeoff. Well, uh... not really. I start up again, and wait,
and wait... an hour on the hobbs before we're cleared for takeoff.

It had gotten quite warm in the cockpit, and my mom had opened the door.
I didn't catch this, and as we're climbing out I notice that it's hard
to talk on the radio. Also, there's a breeze coming from somewhere. My
mom notices the sky showing where the door should be closed, and my dad
(in the back) holds on to her to keep her from being sucked out like
from a jet plane. Knowing that the open door is not a hazard, but
distraction by it is, I just tell my mom "don't worry, just open the
door and close it again." We try a few times, no dice, so we landed at
Caldwell, shut the door, and continued on.

There was a forty knot headwind, and my mom noticed the same lake was in
the same position for a long time. We're not moving! We're going to
fall out of the sky!. Well, we don't, and eventually make it to Ithaca
with no further incident, and have a great visit with my sister.

That was door day. The car we got picked up in had the door fall off.
There was a problem with the door in the building she was living in (I
forgot what the problem was), and there were a few other things that had
to do with doors that day.

Both she and my dad continued to fly with me.

from Spencer to Spirit Lake, Ia, about 25 miles. This was just a few months
after I had gotten my ticket and used a rental C-152. About half way into
the flight, I looked over at Mom and asked her how she was doing. She
replied with something like "I'm ok, what about you???". I was fine. It was
a smooth and uneventful flight. I think she was more concerned about me than
herself. I haven't had the opportunity to take her up again lately yet.

I've taken my dad for a ride a couple times. Once was a round trip between
Spencer and Spirit Lake in a rental C-152 and once in my Ercoupe from Fort
Dodge to Humboldt. When coming in for a landing at Humboldt, I wasn't set up
the way I liked so I did a go around. My dad started taking flying lessons
back in the early 40's in a Luscombe but never soloed and also flew in
B-17's during WWII so he enjoys flying. I hope to take him up again.

I took my brother for a ride once from New Ulm to Sleepy Eye, Mn in my
Ercoupe. Since my brother weighs almost twice as much as I do, I carefully
checked the W&B before that flight. He only wanted to fly straight and
level. He enjoyed it but was a bit nervous.

My uncle came to Humboldt a few years ago and saw my Ercoupe and said he
wanted a ride with me someday. I saw him a few times since but we never got
the chance to fly together. He passed away over a week ago.

We had "interesting" weather for our flight to see Mr. & Mrs. Montblack, up
in the Minneapolis area. The jet-stream was screaming right over us, and
thus we were bucking a 55 knot headwind all the way from Iowa City to ANE.
The temperature at 5500 feet was minus 15 Fahrenheit.

I took a picture of my GPS, showing a ground speed of 86 knots, just to
prove it to myself. It was a looong flight.

Then, while we were donating all of our money to the Mall of America, an
Alberta Clipper swept down from Canada and buried Atlas under 3 inches of
light, fluffy snow. Unaccustomed to such abuse, he nevertheless shook it
off with aplomb...thanks to six of us sweeping and scraping everything off
before departure. (Haven't done *that* in a long time, probably not since
flight training in Wisconsin...)

The flight home was very nice, into (of course!) another headwind. Only
about 15 knots this time, however.

Today, it's 50 degrees here. When we left Minnesota, the wind chill was
below zero. Gotta love November!

I'm HAPPY when I see a 86 knot ground speed in my plane... ;-) Sounds like
y'all had a great Thanksgiving!

You should have came over onto the Omaha sectional and stopped by on your

Maybe that's why I've never been on the Chicago sectional? ;-)

I keep buying them every once in a while thinking about trips to Oshkosh,
Cedar Rapids, Iowa City or Keokuk. One of these days...

I know it's dumb, in this age of moving-map-GPS, but we truly are
artificially limited by our sectional boundaries. When we're thinking of
places to go, we just whip out the map and start hunting around for likely
targets -- and that means that anything "off the edge" never seems to get
seen.

For example, there are quite a few airports in southern Minnesota (less than
an hour away) that we've never been to, simply for that reason. It's really
dumb.

What airport are you based at again? Maybe we'll have to explore "off the
grid" one of these days?

Come on Jay the hotel business can't be that bad. Buy yourself a couple of
more sectionals.

Didn't you hear - it's the new Homeland Security threat. Terrorists are
planning to cross sectional boundaries to commit mayhem. Border patrols
are being put in place, and anyone desiring to cross a sectional
boundary will need to contact Homeland Security five days before the
planned excursion for a complete background check.

It had been rumored that some terrorists will attempt a sectional
crossing by car, but this rumor has been dismissed by Homeland Security
Chief Chuck Enlittle as unfounded. "Crossing a sectional boundary by
car is totally impractical and beyond the capability of even the most
determined terrorist." He went on to state that only aircraft, with
their unlimited potential for distraction, could manage such a feat.

Terrorists are planning to use the Global Positioning System to aid in
navigation while they are near the hazardous Sectional Boundaries. The
President is considering whether or not to "dumb down" the signal so
that terrorists would crash, and thus identify themselves. "Why not -
we've dumbed down everything else", he said as he emerged from his
latest appearance, at Contadina University. That plan would have some
flaws, including the two legitimate flights in the air, who would become
so disoriented by the degraded signals that they could not actually look
out the window and see where they are. Instead, the United States is
planning to simply disallow the use of GPS units in the air. Terrorists
would not disobey such restrictions.

Garmin officials are girding for the onslaught, preparing thousands of
ham sandwiches and tuna sandwiches to replace the outlawed GPS units.
Pilots will be able to exchange their Garmin units for the culinary
navigation solution of their choice, after passing a background check.
Installation will be extra, and more frequent data updates will be
needed. Ham and tuna will need to be replaced weekly in the upper
latitudes, and every other day in the warmer climates. Company
officials have cauationed pilots about the hazards of using
non-certified ham or tuna obtained from grocery stores. "It could get
ugly", he was quoted as saying. It was unclear however whether he was
referring to the updates, or to the installation itself.

It must be a 'border war' thing like Iowa/Wisconsin/Minnesota during college
football season only for us flyers, it's between the Omaha and Chicago
sectionals.

My plane is still hangared up at St James (JYG) for a few more months then
I'll move it down here to Fairmont (FRM) when the new hangars get built.

It's only 2.5 hours in my plane from JYG to IOW at 78 knots. One of these
daze... ;-)

Lake Powell houseboat "Wildwind II". :-)
FNL (Fort Collins - Loveland, Colorado, north of Denver)
-> U07 (Bullfrog Basin, Glen Canyon Nat'l Recreation Area)
-> FNL

Out on Wed, back 1/2 way on Sunday, weathered into Glenwood Springs
(GWS) due to clouds east of GWS. Spent Sunday evening at the
"World's Largest Outdoor Hot Springs". Launched too early, at 9AM,
could not get across Hagerman Pass to Leadville, Colorado. Launched
again at noon, flew west and south across Grand Mesa, to Montrose,
then 10 miles south of Gunnison VOR, then over to Gunnison, then
northeast to Cottonwood Pass, across Buena Vista, Kenosha Pass, west
of the DEN Class B and back home to FNL.

FUN! Planning on going again next Thanksgiving. You are invited!
