Not sure, if you or someone else can give me a month/year I will see if I
can run it down.

I don't remember the exact month of the column. I tried searching
Flying's site and tried Google, but couldn't find it. I found several
old articles at the Flying site, but they were just a sampling of BAx
Seat, not a chronological collection. Seems like it must exist, but
maybe they haven't bothered to convert/scan in all of the articles. I
don't know if they were even in electronic format originally so they may
only exist as typewritten paper in a file somewhere.

Best I've done so far is that it was printed very early 1998 or late 1997.

I believe the last "Bax Seat" written by Gordon Baxter appeared in the
December 1998 issue of "Flying".

An original "Bax Seat" appeared in the January 1998 issue of "Flying",
there's no mention of retirement. The February issue had a "Bax Seat" that
originally appeared in "Flying" in August 1983. The following month was an
original, again no mention of retirement. April and May were reruns, the
June 1998 column was an original, without any hint of retirement. In July
1998 the column was no longer "Bax Seat", it was "Best of Baxter". There
was a note at the end of the column explaining that Bax's "condition" had
been acting up lately, and that while they awaited his next new column "Best
of Baxter" would run in its place. "Best of Baxter" appeared every month
until December 1998 saw a new "Bax Seat" column., but still no word on
retirement. "Best of Baxter" appeared from January through July 1999. A
new "Bax Seat" appeared in the August 1999 issue, but it wasn't written by
Gordon Baxter, it was written by Mike Trahan. The column was about a recent
visit with Bax and a ride in Trahan's Skylane. "Best of Baxter" appeared
monthly from September 1999 through January 2000. Mac McClellan's January
2000 column explained that the "Best of Baxter" appearing in that issue
would be the last one and that there would be no more new "Bax Seat" either.
His medical condition simply did not allow him to write.

Maybe I'm hallucinating then. I just thought I remembered a "hanging up
my hat" column.

Apparently it had been hoped that Bax's condition would improve enough to
allow him to resume writing his column, and by the time it became clear that
wasn't going to happen he wasn't able to write a farewell. A shame, my two
favorite items in "Flying" were "Bax Seat" and Len Morgan's "Vectors".

I just had a thought. (No, it's not my first.) Perhaps you were thinking
of Len Morgan's last "Vectors" column? He did write a fairly poignant
column as his final "sign off", it appeared in the October 1999 issue.

Likewise. Is Len still around? I haven't heard his name mentioned for
a while.

That is very possible. I dropped my Flying subscription shortly after
Bax and Len left as they were the main reasons I read that rag.

You are likely thinking of a recently published column by Mr. Baxter
that had been stashed away in the Flying files for several years. Issue
was Oct. 2005. The editors of Flying had held on to it waiting for an
appropriate time for it to be published.

Are you thinking of the column he wrote circa February-March 1989 when
he told of his decision to stop flying?

No, I remember that one. I may well have gotten Len and Bax confused.

I sent an e-mail to the Flying editorial staff last night. No word back yet.
I think we are looking at '95-'96.
