Does the 430 have extended runway depictions like the 196 and other
handhelds have?
Does the 430 have the VNAV profile for descents like the 196 and other
handhelds have?

No, and yes, in that order.

Bill, as a user of a GNS430 who has never seen the extended runway
depictions feature of a 196 before, I am curious what that feature is.
Could you describe it?
I am able to get an extended runway centerline to almost any airport with
an instrument approach by choosing "Vectors to Final" procedure option on
the GNS430, but apparently that is not what the OP desires?
Thanks for any insight.

Extended runway on the 196 includes all runways, and not just the one
you have VTF to. Sort of a mini localizer icon extending out from all
runwayson the airport.

Peter,

A feature used on many handhelds to keep the pilot's eyes inside the
cockpit at a crucial time when they should be outside <gd&r>

...and if the extensions on the 196 bother you, you can turn them off.

Ah, but you can setup same with the Direct button, scroll (twist) down to
course & put in your approach course. When you return to the map page, the
intercept course will be there. With an A/P, you use the heading bug to
intercept and arm the Nav/Approach. When you capture, the plane turns
inbound. The same technique works when intercepting an airway.
( I'm sure I skipped a step. )

Doesn't that take you to the airport reference point, though? Or doesn't
the difference between the ARP and the landing runway matter when you are
many miles from the airport?

It has been my experience that the procedure takes you to the end of the
runway. Perhaps it's the IFR nature of the product or the reference point
so close enough to the centerline that it's not apparent.
Although, when nav'ing Direct to the airport, I believe the GPS points to
the airport reference point. But at that point I'm entering the pattern VFR
anyway.

You can show extended runways quite easily with the 430 by using the OBS
button. Assuming your next waypoint on the 430 is your intended airport,
just turn HSI or CDI to runway heading while in OBS mode and you will have
extended runway shown on map to help set up your approach. If you are using
autopilot in NAV mode just be sure to change to heading mode before
selecting OBS to avoid unanticipated turn. Works quite well and very simple.
