Sad when a man with such a glorious background succumbs to the trappings
of politics.

Trappings of bribery. Sadly, the guy was for sale. There may be more
opportunities in politics, but this was being on the take plain and
simply.

Yes. Even sadder still when he goes down in flames alone and the crooked
companies that bribed him are allowed to continue to do work with the
Federal Government. I've never heard of MZM Inc. - went to their website
and it made some vague reference to doing "Homeland Security" work but no
specifics. Does anyone know if they build anything related to Naval
Aviation?

Even sadder when he takes $2.4 million in bribes.

Current news reports indicate there's more to come, including other
so-called defense contractors.

Again based on news reports, nothing specific mentioned dealing with
naval aviation.

Not on the level you're discussing Mike, but I can assure you, there will be
an unwritten and fairly silent but brutal ramification within the naval
fighter community.
Cunningham was the top dog in VN..number 1....the bragging rights if you
will. Ritchie has always been merely the good natured runner up at any O
club bar on any naval fighter base since the Viet Nam War. You know fighter
pilots. It's all in fun and very friendly, but deadly serious at the same
time. This kind of reversal doesn't go down well at Squadron level.
Cunningham did it for the navy in VN, and they have been enjoying that and
engaging in friendly harassment with their AF counterparts ever since the
war.
Now Cunningham has handed these guys the ultimate wet towel and from what I
know of the fighter community, the navy fighter community will NEVER forgive
him, even if it's just for that last round at the bar the Air Force would
normally have paid for.
Cunningham is a classic example of a good man gone bad! I can't think of
anyone in my lifetime who had more going for him and ended up with less than
Randy.

Excuse me? Here was the question: "Does anyone know if they build
anything related to Naval Aviation?"

I have no idea whatsoever as to what you _think_ I was claiming with my
response above.

And this has what to do with what was asked, and the resulting
response?

This may come somewhat as a shock, but it's going to be more than the
"navy fighter community" which isn't going to foregive him for what
he's done.

But more to the point; what does it have to do with what was asked, and
the response?

> Cunningham is a classic example of a good man gone bad! I can't think of

And he has nobody to blame but himself, which I assume there will be no
argument. And as before, this has what to do with the question asked,
and what I posted?

Not interested in being profound. This is Usenet, not a class on Fermat's
Last Theorem.
You had already answered the posters question with a statement that didn't
need further amplification. Rather than open a new thread with a simple
comment about additional ramifications that might be happening within the
naval fighter community, I simply used your post to segway into that
additional comment by prefacing my post with a comment saying in effect that
I was doing this. That opening sentence was in part,
" Not on the level you're discussing Mike............but..........".
Your answering post to me was argumentative, overly aggressive, and
unnecessarily confrontational.
I take it you didn't like the thread creep.
If you had posted to me and simply said you objected to the creep, I would
have answered you and apologized to you.
For the way you posted to me however..........at the risk of seeming
unprofound, it's a simple "go **** yourself" and always will be when dealing
with me.

Tell you what Weeks. It just isn't worth our time and the newsgroup
bandwidth to continue this or any other communication. Let's just call it a
day and I'll refrain from posting to you again.
I'd appreciate it if you will show me the same courtesy and all will be well

Cunningham, after 10 years in the slammer will come out with an asshole
almost as big as he turned out to be!
2.4 Million in bribes and he believed it would never come to light!
Too bad he wasn't a Democrat in the House.

There is something missing here. I talked to a guy who was in his
squadrod or knew him very well. A great pilot, but not so great an
Naval officer. He was in the process of being rifted after he got
turned down twice for a regular commission. After he got the 5th Mig,
he got a call from the CNO who told him that a special augmentation
board had just been held and he was happy to tell him that he had been
selected to the Regular Navy.

I have a friend who writes books about Naval fighter aviation and get a
similar feedback. In fact, one of the characters in one of his books is
"loosely" patterned after Duke Cunningham.

From what I have heard, nobody thought Cunningham was too bright.

Well you heard wrong. It takes a certain amount of intelligence to become a
Naval Aviator to start with. Dummies don't make it!

While he wasn't in any danger of receiving a noble prize, he didn't need
anyone to tie his shoes either. He was about average. He really was only
interested in flying, and had no desire to be CNO, and never wanted anything
other than duty in a squadron. There is nothing wrong with that.

All true. Nobody would have accused Duke of being the consummate naval
officer. He was a mark-one, mod-zero aviator and nothing more. He wasn't
even necessarily the best Phantom driver, but he was quite possibly the best
PREPARED Phantom driver in Vietnam circa 1972. He was presented
opportunities quite by chance and capitalized on them to the tune of 5
kills. There were more than a few guys in theatre with equal skills and at
least some of the opportunities and came away with nothing (due to a failure
to reset the gunsight for A/A, failure to turn on missile cooling, etc etc).

And with all due respect for you, Duke and the other theatre aviators,
I'm reminded of the old maxim that success requires no explanation, and
failure allows no excuses.
