Shooting a Pilot

Reading Jay Beckman's profile on his photo site (which ends with "GO SHOOT
SOMETHING") reminded me of a funny story from a week or so ago.

I've a friend that's been in a number of movies etc. (ie. he's a recurring
role on the Sopranos, he was in several Star Trek episodes, he was in Class
Action, Phone Booth, etc.) I was with him just before he flew to CA for
"pilot season".

Apparently, "pilot season" is when people in CA get together to make pilot
episodes for TV serials. But he kept talking about "pilot season" and
"shooting a pilot"!

I finally told him that I was getting a little nervous being around him,
given his desire to go shoot a pilot during pilot season.

I'm staying away from the west coast for a while.

Speaking of shooting a pilot, my aviation hero, Wally Olson, of
Evergreen Field in Vancouver, Washington once told me about the time
that he was flying a small airplane (I think it was his BC12D, but it
might have been his Champ. He saw a man who was walking with his dog,
point a rifle up at the airplane, so Wally pointed the airplane at the
man, who then dropped his rifle and ran very fast! Wally had several
planes for rent, cheaper than anywhere else, ( the 172 was $25 per hour
wet, the 150 was $20, and this was in the early 1990's!) but the
airworthiness was debatable. His 150 had a bullet hole in the airframe,
less than a foot behind where the pilot was sitting. I think about this
sometimes when I am flying low during certain times of the year, and
then I fly higher to avoid the "farmers" who may want to protect their
"agricultural products".

LOL. No I did not! And the pilots certainly should not be shot or
hunted.

Right up there with the apocriphal (sp?) story about the TV News crew who
pulled up to the gates of the White House and their producer announced that
they were there to "Shoot The President."
