Still not Industrial Light and Magic, but a first step, anyway.
3D San Antonio sectional rendered on a rotating sphere.
aka: what cowboy astronauts think the world looks like.
Some people are already wondering, "Why? Why would anybody do that?"
Well, that's an interesting question.
caveats -
No executables, dlls, etc. involved.
It's just an animated Gif.
7604737 (count 'em)7,604,737 great big bytes.
I really did work at keeping the file size down.
But I dare say this one is for the fast lane exclusively.
Mot certified for navigation.
The source chart was out of date. (sorry)

So, who has the fastest rig?
Anybody significantly under five minutes?

What the hell kind of alien technology are you playing with, Jim?

Mee too. Maybe ...14 seconds :-)
The globe pulled up (full view) instantaneously but was spinning (somewhat)
slowly while it finished loading. When it finished, it spun a little bit
faster. I can click it to make it almost full screen. That's it. Does it do
anything else? I can hold down the <click> and stop it.

Don't tell Jim in NC mine was 14 sec - ok?

I was going to upload it to my web cell phone.
Well, it's neater than anything THEY'VE got on it.
But the cell phone took one look at that thing and called the cops.
Gave them GPS coordinates and everything!
No charges filed, as long as I keep it on a laptop from mow on.
12 minutes via wireless.

Ditto, globe up instantly and spinning smoothly about 15 seconds later.

Supposedly 1.5 gig cable. Never runs that hot, since not many can or will
feed it that fast. :-)

Sounds like you have gif animation disabled?
Or was that 8 seconds to load the first frame
and we're still waiting in the next one???

It must be disabled -- now to figure out ----how to enable it . probably
a setting hidden somewhere I spoze . I built the puter, but windows
software humiliates me on a regular basis.

5.227 seconds till the globe appeared and _started_ (jumpily) to rotate.
42.713 seconds til the download was complete, and the smooth rotation
kicked in.
Thats on a 1.5mbit/768k DSL -- 'theoretical maximum' download speed
would be about 39.5 seconds.
