Our local ground launch club is buying 5000 ft of 3/16 AmSteel grey
spectra for winching/auto tow. In talking to the supplier the price
gets lower the more we buy, so we are wondering if anyone else is
interested in joining in a bulk order for late March delivery?
If you are interested, please send your statement of interest direct to
my email address and we will keep you informed of progress/pricing.
Thanks,

I am not in this proposed group purchase but I did research the Spectra
price a couple of years ago. I found the price was very flexable and
subject to the amount you buy and, of course, the negotiation skills of the
buyer. The high price I found was $.55/Ft. and the low was $.21/ft. for
6000 Ft. of 3/16".
There is no need to buy one unspliced length. You will be splicing it
anyway and the splices are easy and nearly invisible. If rems are
available, try to get them cheap. You can get the stuff in any color of the
rainbow so if you can, pick a vary visible color.
A group buy should get the price near the $.21/Ft. figure. I got the strong
impression that the amounts proposed for a glider winch were 'huge' in the
eyes of the salesman. I think the average purchase is a few hundred feet.
So, buy big and negotiate hard.
BTW, I smell a business opportunity for a glider equipment dealer.

Hello:
Fibre Optics companies use the stuff by the miles, if you can find one
that is about to purchase you can sometimes piggyback with them and get
it for around $.17 or less.

In the fishing industry, longliners use the stuff in lengths of many miles;
I've heard of 20 plus mile sets. You might check the National Fisherman
website in the "Marketplace" section for vendors.
