View Full Version : Central Ohio TFR

The Columbus DISPATCH has an article saying that Bush will be in Dublin
(northwest side of Columbus) for a speech at WENDY'S INTERNATIONAL
(Wendy's hamburghers) at 12:15 on Wednesday, Feburuary 15.
Wendy's headquarters is one mile northwest of KOSU, The Ohio State
University Airport-Don Scott Field.
Bush will will either land at Rickenbacker (KLCK) or Port Columbus
(KCMH). In any event, a 30 nm radius TFR will effectively shut down
every airport in Central Ohio (Franklin, Delaware, Knox, Licking,
Fairfield, Pickaway, Madison, Union Counties (and a five others that I
cannot remember the names of).
Considering that Franklin County alone has 600 registered aircraft and
several hundred pilots, and that Central Ohio is the home of several
national/international companies with large aviation departments, this
is going to cause some headaches (just as it does everywhere else).

Someone needs to take the interference with interstate commerce tact sometime. These TFRs do absolutely nothing to
protect the president, or anyone else for that matter....

Presidential version of the $100 hamburger.

Don't forget Bolton, and all the private strips.

Yeah, I work out near Port Columbus, I swear every time he visits town, he
leaves at rush hour and 670 is shut down in both directions for an hour.
What a PITA.

he has to show somehow that he is (believes to be) the most important
person on this planet.
he threatens us with a visit, too. I hope that we here can raise some
protests against his visit. we can't affort the negative economical impact
of such a "visit".

well, it is your president, you have to deal with him (whoever you have
voted as your 4-year-god), but he is not our prez, so we can (hopefully)
chose who visits us.

so it will never become reality.
if it makes sense there is no way a politician will pick up the idea.

So he gets in trouble from people whom he vists.....
Not long after he gets in trouble from those he didn't visit.

A special DC convention center for POTUS visits? I can just see that:
" He's got a presidential throne. We have to make a pilgrimmage now?"

Good thing I'm in no danger of being president.

That is pretty much what Lyndon Johnson did. He had his chair placed higher
than visitors so he could look down on them and they had to look up at him.

I once toured one of LBJs "air force one" aircraft. Seems he couldn't
quit fiddling with the thermostat. So the crew just disconnected it.
He still fiddled, and was happy, but it wasn't doing anything at all.
Come to think of it, I think he raised the chair on that aircraft, too..

How about fishing?
Wendy's headquarters is only half a mile up the hill from the river.
(Makes you wonder where they get that "fresh" fish, daily?)

I'm not eating anything out of that stretch of river.

"Olentangy" means "square fish" :P

Thanks for the heads up on the TFR John, you've beat both the AOPA TFR

Eeeuwww! Back when I was in Columbus, ('76-'80) if you fell in the
Olentangy, they took you right to the student health center, to give you
shots for typhoid, dysentery, and who knows what else!

Is it any cleaner, now?

Yes. The exception is when we get heavy rain. Dublin's sewers overflow and
spew into the river.

Yes the "Old and Grungy" is much cleaner now.
However, Wendy's is near the Scioto.
The Olentangy is three miles farther east.

Nope! That was fixed eight years ago when they built the tunnel. Robot
drilling machines, 8 ft diameter, dug a 12 mile tunnel through mostly
solid rock, 80 ft underground to handle the sewage to the treatment
center.

I didn't know where the Wendy's HQ was. The Old and Grungy, for those that
don't know, goes right past OSU's campus.

A quick story. I was in the OSU marching band. Punishment for messing up
in a half-time show according to tradition, used to be getting thrown in the
river, the first practice after the game. The director had to dis-allow the
practice after the river became a health hazard, a few years before I got
there.

At the last practice before the Big Game, (OSU vs. Michigan) some Michigan
punk came up and threw a pie in our director's face. A couple of our band's
finest took off after the kid. They threw a full contact flying tackle (on
asphalt) that would have made the team's linebackers proud, and they all
went down, in a roll of gray and blue, with bloody elbows and knees ,
everywhere.

They drug the pie assassin back for judgment, in front of the director.
Still standing on his directing ladder wiping pie off his face, he looked
down at the unfortunate punk, trying to decide what to do with him.

You guessed it. With a full and direct move, he turned 180 degrees, and
pointed towards the river! Amid widespread cheers, he was pulled by the
shoulders across the street, up and over the hill to the river's edge, and
unceremoniously tossed in the river.

He was not helped back out, and I don't know if he went to get any shots,
but you know, I didn't really care. :-)

That stretch of the river used to be called "Tampon Bay" due to Dublin
sewers overflowing.

A new sewer line was built which took care of much of that problem.

While digging the new sewer line underground, the tunneling machine became
stuck when it hit an underground moraine. Lots of time and dollars later
the machine was rescued.

Air Force One arrived at CMH at 11:00 local time, departed at 14:00 local
time.
All that hoo-ha for a three hour visit. I think half the cops in the state
were positioned along 270 and 670 on the east side.
