View Full Version : Third "turbine" on top of large Mil helis?

March 17th 06, 04:49 PM
Hi, many of the large Mil helis have what looks like a third turbine
above, and slightly behind the two main turbines. What is it? All of
the specs for these helis say they have two turbines. I can see blades
in some photos, so it's obviously something like a turbine.

Thanks, Justin.

Oil Cooler fan

That is an auxiliary power unit (APU) for pneumatic main turbine starting.
Required for self-contained operations. At least some models of Mil are
equipped with Ivchenko AI-9V APU unit.

Use e.g. Vivisimo meta-search engine www.vivisimo.com and type "Mil Mi APU"
and you get more information about the subject.

Oil cooler fan mentioned earlier is not a bad idea after all! Some larger
Mil helos may have a main transmission cooling system located just there.

Thanks for that. Mystery solved :)

Justin, Look at first picture. Left rear of cowling shows small exhaust
for APU (I'd guess about 5 in. compared to larger main engines).

The APU is behind the transmission.

Yes I agree, it seems to be the case. The APU is behind the main
transmission. The "third turbine" has to be an oil cooler fan.
