In the USA, we now have between 500,000 and 600,000 pilots (down from
700,000 20 years ago).
For the international viewers of this group, how many pilots does your
government report?

You have to weight it against the general population figure as well.
The US has almost 300M pop, which makes one pilot per 500.

I know France lists 46,000 pilots, for about 60M pop, which is one pilot
per 1300 - between a half and a third of the US rate.

John,

Germany lists about 20000 registered aircraft(imagine that half that
number is parked at OSH each year), including over 7000 sailplanes and
6700 SEL.

There seem to about 60000 pilots and about 85 million citizens, so 1
pilot per 1400 citizens.

The registered aircraft numbers can be deceiving.
In the USA for example, there are many aircraft that remain on the
active registry, but are in various stages of
assembly/disassembly/airworthiness.
As a result, post 9/11, the FAA has tightened up on the accuracy and
requires a confirmation of status every three years.

Canada's statistics are here:

Approximately 70,000, but you have to read the page carefully to pull out
things like balloonists, student-permits, etc., if you do not want those in
your count.

My plane is listed as not having the three year renewal. I called the
FAA and they said, no, it was alright. ???? Don't ask me???
