View Full Version : Special Offer ONLY for Rec.Aviation.Piloting folks...

Bill Fox (the retired Lockheed Skunkworks project coordinator who was
in charge during the development of the SR-71 Blackbird) has generously
volunteered to give his 1-hour Blackbird presentation in our new
theater at the inn on Tuesday, May 30th, at 7 PM. His talk will be
followed by Bill's very special "home video" about the Blackbird, and a
question & answer period.
(FYI: After leaving the Skunkworks, Bill went on to run the notorious
"Area 51" in Nevada, and -- I believe it's safe to say -- he knows as
much about the super secret operations at Groom Lake as any living
American.)
Bill donated ALL of the cool artwork and memorabilia (including a real
SR-71 pitot-static probe!) in our "Blackbird Suite," and if you have
ANY interest in this ultimate aircraft, you will find him to be a
fascinating speaker. I have spent hours chatting with him, and never
once ran out of questions!
Because we only have room for 25 in the theater, we will be taking
reservations for seating. (There is no charge to hear his talk, of
course.) As thanks to all of you for all your help over the last three
years, the first 5 seats will be set aside ONLY for
rec.aviation.piloting readers!
Bill is in his 80's now, and I suspect he won't be giving these talks
forever. Email me directly at if you wish to
come for the talk. It should be a memorable occasion!

webcam! (or at least record it and make it available to folks...)
I'm sure more than a few folks here in r.a.p. could transfer
the video to DVD.

No doubt! I'll bet that if you contact the university - school of
broadcasting, there would be more than a few students that need to do a
video project, and could come out to tape the whole thing - with a couple HD
cameras, fancy microphones, and mixers, and make a nice dvd out of it. It
couldn't hurt to ask!
If not, set up a camera and let it run.
You will need to get a cordless mic for the hotel, for presentations and
such, so go out and get one to pass around for questions, and one for the
speaker.
More toys to buy! Fun, fun! <g>

Yeah, what Bob said...
Excellent idea to have Bill speak, Jay. Great idea Bob. I'd like to
see also, too far for me to attend.

I will record it, but I'm not sure how we'll be able to "stream" such a
humongous file. (No, I don't mean "live")
Jav, you out there? How can we do this? *Can* we do this?

The guys over at www.studentpilot.com might be able to help as well. A
few there (e.g. "PaulThomas" have some dedicated server space).

Streamed or not (live or "memorex"), putting it on DVD might be
an extra enticement for r.a.p. folks to drop by and pick one up
sometime. And I'm sure some of us (like me) would be happy
to pay the appropriate shipping and handling for a DVD in the
mail. I'm not sure when I'll be back in the area.

mentioned before).

just be sure to split the file in some pieces and describe the content of
each piece.

*sigh*
I'd be there in a heartbeat... if only I could.
Sometimes that which enables us to pursue the world of flight also demands
that we let special opportunities such as this pass us by.
When the AirZoo in Kalamazoo, MI received the SR-71 that they currently have
on display, they were required to remove the engines and several other items
for return to the Smithsonian. I was lucky enough to take one of the last
publicly offered tours of their refurbish hanger where the mechanics showed
us the engines sans-cowlings... truly amazing.

I think you'll find QuickTime (mov) format compresses the most, but
Windows Media Format (wmv) also provides remarkable compression. Of
course, there is a tradeoff of quality for compression.
Although RealPlayer provides superior compression also, it is so
invasive and full of spyware, that I won't view files encoded in that
format.

Now, why would the Smithsonian want the engines back?

Something about their "sharing" deal with other museums, if I remember
correctly. They were headed for a static (bummer) display somewhere.
They sure were awesome to see...

Most probably because the Smithsonian has the largest aircraft engine
collection in the world and wants to preserve examples forever. SI has
LOTS of stuff housed all over the world. If you want to see an SR with
the engines on I suggest you come on over to the Udvar-Hazy Center :-)

That's what I want! I want to see the engines on, making a heck of a

I've been transferring old video tapes onto DVD lately, and ran across
a video I took of an SR-71 thundering over the OSH flight line at maybe
100 feet AGL.. It was taped sometime in the early 90s -- maybe 1993?
I got shivers watching it. I had forgotten that I'd ever seen a
Blackbird in flight!

I have been spending every spare minute (sadly, not very many of those
lately) transfering the tapes to DVD, with the intention of actually
organizing them when I'm done.
I started at Christmas, when I got the DVD recorder. I'm up to 1998.
You do the math. At this rate, you'll see that SR-71 video sometime in
2007...

Enough of this bull. ;-)
You have birthday parties, summer outings, Christmas tapes, ect. Then you
have a SR-71, on tape.
You obviously need to get your priorities straight, and.......
Go _out of order_ for this one! Straight to the head of the line! <g>
So you'll have it on the website, when? Tomorrow about this time?

Do not rush him on these home movies unless you're prepared to watch cool
airplane stuff, inexplicably mixed with 25 minutes of a kid's soccer games.
