What are the odds of this. The article doesn't mention any airport in the
area.

Just about any reasonable size lake (like Lake Lucille) or calm bay in that
area is a likely "airport" in that neck of the woods. But 10 miles south
seems to put the collision in the rough neighborhood of Birchwood Airport.

From the article, "Johnson said arrangements were being made to
retrieve the wreckage and continue an investigation into what caused the
crash."
What caused the crash!? Are they going to read the minds of the 2
pilots post postmortem, and determine why they didn't see each other sooner?

Yes, they can do that. They will check the position of the
Sun, time of day, visual field of view, reported clouds.
There was a collision over NYC many years ago when airlines
flew VFR. Two airliners were flying in reference to a
sloping cloud deck. They had a 1,000 foot separation, saw
each other and took evasive action and collided.

The violated one of the prime laws of the universe... Two objects shall not
occupy the same point in the space time continuum... As it was, they learned
about yet another law... An object in motion will remain in motion unless
acted upon by an exterior force... <sick-grin>

There are about 55-60 "airports" within 10-12 miles of where this
happened, and that doesn't include the lakes used by float planes.
The odds are pretty high of a midair happening in this area, I'm
surprised it hasn't happened sooner.
