I urgently need to find out about gliding operations in Namibia or the
adjacent bit of South Africa. Can anyone give me any contacts or
links?

Been there, done that, hoping for some direct leads and tips.

Can't say more in public.

Ralph Woodward stays there for soaring season the last
few years...he is currently on the road...he might
be able to answer questions.

Learnt there and have flown occasionally since. Not my cup of tea as a
club, on the whole, though it's a nice place.

My first solo there was 4 minutes (strict instructions not to soar).
Second solo - immediately afterwards - was 1 h 29 m ...

Hmm, very mysterious. Does it have anything to do with Angelina Jolie?

Besides Bitterwasser and Pokweni in Namibia (where they had over 100 -
1000km flights over the 2005/06 summer season) - there are operations
at Gariep Dam and Soaring Safaries at Bloemfontein in South Africa
aimed at hosting foreign pilots over the summer season. The website for
Gariep is www.gariepgliding.com and the website for Bloemfontein is
www.soaring-safaris.com. The Soaring Society of South Africa
(www.sssa.org.za) website has links to all the various club websites
and contact numbers if you do not wish to work through a commercial
operation or if you want to fly outside the November to January period.
