Bo Catlett: You broke into my house, and I have a witness to it.
Chili Palmer: What?

Bo Catlett: Only this time it ain't no John Wayne and Dean Martin shooting
bad guys in "El Dorado."

Chili Palmer: That was "Rio Bravo." Robert Mitchum played the drunk in "El
Dorado." Dean Martin played the drunk in "Rio Bravo." Basically, it was the
same part. Now John Wayne, he did the same in both. He played John Wayne.

Bo Catlett: Man, I can't wait for you to be dead.

And oh yeah..........I used to sing once in a while when giving dual. I was
so good one of my students told me I should be on the stage. He said the

The flight office staff was even more supportive of my singing talent. They

Its about all I know. Like just about everyone in the early-mid 60s I tried
to get involved in a garage band with some friends. I took a few drum
lessons, until it became clear that it is necessary to coordinate and
synchronize the hands and feet. End of drum career. And you think Peter

Oddly enough, my "proficiency" on a set of drums did not carry through to
tailwheel aircraft, of which I've flown several - including a 1931 Stinson
and the DC-3- without incident. Go figure.

Well....neither of my media escapades made me a celeb, but I did
do the flying scenes in one of Hollywood's poorer excuses for a
movie entitled "Last Plane Out" and also had a major speaking role
in one of Walter Cronkite's 20th Century documentaries entitled
"Russian Ships Off Our Coast".

"Last Plane Out" was about an American reporter leaving Managua,
Nicaragua (and his Nicaraguan girlfriend) just before the fall to
the Sandinistas. It was directed by David Nelson, and starred
Jan-Michael Vincent and Mary Crosby.
We had one B-707 that through the magic of vinal stick-ons played
the part of two or three different airplanes.
Sometime in the early '80s as I recall.

Back in the early '60s, Kronkite came to Brunswick, Maine to do a
doumentary about the large Russian trawler fleet fishng just off
the New England coast (Georges Bank) and the spy ships that were
hiding among them doing ELINT. As the Air Intelligence Officer, I
was shown briefing a VP-21 SP-2H crew prior to their takeoff.

Never could pronounce the names of those Russian Ships. :-(
Hmmmm....I wonder if HECTOP is still out there somewhere?

I think that would be a diddlepara, more correctly known as a reverse single
paradiddle - yes, I googled it. For a long time I've thought of it as
starting with the left hand, probably because in marching band we always
started the first beat on the left foot. I studied music many years ago, and
took some class percussion lessons, but didn't remember all the variations
on paradiddles.

Except, if you happen to do like I do, and just have the reader
show only new messages, you don't see the context. However, it's
no big deal to just press a button and look at the previous message
up the thread to remind myself of what it said.

But when you do a "show all messages", you have to wade through so many
unwanted threads and messages to see what you are looking for.

Much easier if people would just quote...

But... As the messages get spread between servers there is no
guarantee the messages will be in the proper order. It's quite common
to find them out of order, or even find a number of answers to a
question before the original post shows up.
In this news group I've seen as many as 6 or 7 posts show up before
the original.

No news reader is going to put those back in order or for the ones
whos computer clock is off by a bunch.

OTOH enough of them show up in order just to make it misleading.

In my case, it was not my computer's clock that determined the posting time,
but my ISP's contracted news server.

Remember back a year or so ago, the news server was in St Louis, so my posts
were being marked a couple hours early?

it is not a matter of using a 'decently programmed newsreader' but a
matter of understanding how usenet works: no matter how decently (whatever
that means) your newsreader has been programmed, it won't change the
fact that the messages/posts do not necessarily appear in the same
order on your server or on mine, and a few might not appear at all
on some server and/or not be kept there as long as on your server, etc.
i.e., the neat little view you have of threads on your machine is not
necessarily, actually very unlikely, the view I have on mine, even
if we both use the very same 'decently programmed newsreader'; hence
the necessity to quote properly; no need to keep the whole thing,
but just enough context that the reader of your post has a chance of
knowing what the heck you are talking about.

No news reader can show you posts that haven't arrived at your news server.
But once they are all there, any competent newsreader can and will display
them in the proper threaded order, primarily by using the References and
Date fields.

Oh, I agree, it is much easier, and I'll admit to getting a
little miffed when it happens. But from experience with
trying ot get others to learn how to use their newsreaders
properly (ie RAP's own skyloony), I find it's less time and
energy to just look it up.

Another factor: some people use newsreaders that mangle the References
header. So their posts don't show up in the correct place in the thread

At one point in the past decade, Jan Michael Vincent got impaired, got
into a car crash and got SERIOUSLY messed up, to the point he nearly
died in the crash.

The local EMS responded, and he required being intubated (placing a
breathing tube in the trachea) to save his life.

Based on the premise that no good deed goes unpunished, Jan sued the EMS
because he ended up hoarse (dunno if permanent or transient)..ALIVE but
hoarse.. This is a common side effect and doesn't imply negligence on
the part of the crew, but needless to say, shows what kind of character
he has. I wonder if he considered that they could have considered him
non-salvageable.

There was a guy on one newsgroup I read who consistently broke threading.
The X-Newsreader header indicated he used a newsreader that was capable of
preserving the References header, but when questioned it turns out he was
manually deleting that header (and a few others) because he didn't know
what it was for.

Well, if you want to pick that nit...

It really should read "but while the posts are still on the server, or saved
on the user's computer, any competent..."

Personally, I think either correction is getting beyond the original point,
which is that the newsreader can and does maintain the correct order of the
posts, regardless of their actual arrival time.

When you do what? You haven't removed the References header.

I have no idea what "blue stuff" means because I don't use the same
newsreader as you. And I was talking about headers, not quoted text. I
strongly encourage cleaning up quoted text, but leaving enough for
context.

This is blue "blue stuff" I'm cleaning up. news:e3ii2u$ogg.......... etc.
That's not the reference header then. Ok.

Oh that. That's just part of the quote attribution, not a header. Not
many newsreaders these days give you access to the news headers, and for
good reason. The guy who was deleting them had just enough knowledge to
be dangerous.

I have show all messages displayed, so I can go back and read more of a
quoted post, or see what was way befor. I don't wade through posts, because
I use the "next unread thread" button, added in the toolbar.

Different strokes, and all.....
