Sport Pilot

A friend of mine is going to let his medical lapse and then fly his
PA-11 under the sport pilot rules. From what both he and I have
researched there is no certifcate issued from the FAA that says you are
a sport pilot. What does a person have to carry when operating under
sport pilot rules, just a drivers license?

This might have been assumed in your post - but he also has to carry his
recreational or better pilot certificate.

We weren't sure because I can't find anywhere where it says that.

61.3(a) A person may not act as pilot in command or in any other
capacity as a required pilot flight crewmember of a civil aircraft of US
registry unless that person -

(1) Has a valid pilot certificate or special purpose pilot authorization
issued under this part in that person's physical possession or readily
accessible in the aircraft...

This applies to all forms of pilot certificates. Part (c) of the same
section talks about medical certificates and the exemption for sport
pilots with a driver's license.

Ray has answered you questions.. as long as the PA-11 has not been modified
by an STC that would render it not LSA qualified.. sounds like a grand plan.

As I understand it, the Sport Pilot is *still* a private pilot (or a
recreational pilot, in my case) and must carry whatever that ticket
requires him to carry. So I must have my recreational certificate in
my possession, along with my log book. (I believe PPs don't need to
have the logbook.)

In other words, you aren't giving up your certificate. You're
exercising it under a new set of rules.

(Obviously one doesn't need to carry the medical certificate. I'm not
sure about the SODA, one of which I happen to have. Likely I'll just
leave these in their place of honor in the logbook.)
