Three vintage World War II bombers will fly into Monterey Peninsula
Airport this month as part of the Collins Foundation "Wings of Freedom"
tour.

The aircraft will arrive from Paso Robles on May 17 and will be on
display at the Monterey Jet Center through May 19, according to Carl
Trebler, tour stop coordinator for the Stow, Mass.-based Collins
Foundation.

The bombers include a Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress," a Consolidated
B-24 "Liberator," and a North American B-25 "Mitchell."
>From the Monterey County (GA) herals:

The twin-engine B-25, one of the principal medium bombers of World War
II and the type of plane flown by Gen. Jimmy Doolittle and his Tokyo
Raiders in America's first bombing attack on Japan, is making its first
appearance on the "Wings of Freedom" tour.

The four-engine B-17 is one of only 14 flying today, and the
four-engine B-24 is the only "Liberator" in flying condition.

The planes will be open for walk-through tours 3 to 6 p.m., May 17; 9
a.m. to 6 p.m., May 18; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., May 19. Tour donation is
$10 for adults, $5 for children under 12.

Thirty-minute flights aboard the aircraft are available, priced from
$325 to $425. Walk-through admissions and flight donations are tax
deductible, and proceeds are used by the foundation to maintain and fly
the historic planes.

For information, call 373-8907. For flight reservations, call (800)
568-8924.

The Collins Foundation is a nonprofit educational foundation founded in
1979 and is active in the operation and restoration of more than 20
historic aircraft and historic vehicles.
