Chart question

[BTB]

Did my BFR yesterday and while going over the local sectional, I noticed
something and asked the instructor about it.

It was a dashed blank line, labelled 'underground pipeline'.

Now I have to ask - why if it is underground, is it on the chart ? What
is the possible value of it being there ?

Only thing I can think of, they don't want you to crash on it! <g>

Real answer is, they keep the right of way cleared every few years, so it
will show up as a relatively straight line of cleared trees, with no power
line on it.

It is there so that if you have an engine out nearby, you can put it
down in that straight and have a better chance of surviving the forced
landing as opposed to landing into the trees. The path is cleared of
trees (well big ones anyways) for vehecle access.

When the pipeline goes from above ground to underground it makes a good fix.
Depending on what the pile line is carrying, the warmth from the pileline may
melt the snow and give an LOP.

go to google maps or any other charting program with photos.. look up
Goodsprings Nevada, that cleared line parallel to the mountain range running
appx N-S is an underground pipeline.. makes for a handy visual in the middle
of the desert

Not really a good idea.. care to see one glider looked like totaled landing
on what appeared to be a road? Had to airlift the pilot out by helo, and
vehicle access? not really.. sure.. with a Dodge Power Wagon and a couple
of hours to go 3 miles.

He would have been better off landing in the desert about 1 mile west.

If it goes through a forest it will be cleared of trees. If it's in snow
country it will probably be free of snow during the winter as the product
being piped is warm. The pipeline is out of sight but it's presence can be
quite visible.

Homeland Security at work. We won't tell you what it is, just where it
is.
Just as the words "Nuclear Powerplant" have been removed, so have the
words "Underground Pipeline".

It could also be a hint that slow and low aircraft (i.e. pipeline patrol)
could be found along that route.

Charts show what stands out in the area, near New York or
Los Angeles, major roads stand out, in the desert a dirt
path will be shown. Pipelines will show for years, the
digging and different vegetation, the heat from the pumping,
and the pumping stations are obvious.

Near a terminal, they probably won't show pipelines because
there are too many, but once away from the area, where an
individual line can be seen, they will begin to plot them.
Pipeline patrol pilots use engineering topo maps and look
for leaks [dead vegetation] and construction near the line.
