View Full Version : Sierra Photos-Ground and Air

May 11th 06, 11:29 PM
In a web search, I came across some great pictures of the Sierras south
of Yosemite, taken from the ground of areas where some of us soar.
These are at

and the ones of particular interest to me were the the fourth (Lake
Italy, September 2004)
and sixth links (Ansel Adams Wilderness, August 2003) since I have
pictures of the same areas from my glider at

http://www-ee.stanford.edu/~hellman/soaring/pics/040730South/index.html

and some were even taken about the same time! Thanks to Susanne
Riehmann for the ground photos.

Nice photos!
This harkens back to the "best US place to fly" thread. Hard to beat
the scenery.
Once circled a photographer I believe was Galen Rowell as he was
setting up what would likely be a beautiful sunset shot of the
Palisades above his home town of Bishop. A classic Gavin Wills thermal
wicking off the top of an unnamed 12,000 foot peak. Started low. LIft
all round the peak, couldn't spend much time with Galen.
Here's Galen's "Mountain Light" website. When he and his wife died in
a plane crash, we lost lots of talent. If you're in Bishop, CA, do stop
in for a look. Some shots include unbelievable lennies.
There used to be numbered limited edition prints on the wall at
Bishop airport, but they've been replaced by posters.
