Does anyone have any suggestions for the best (safest) VFR route from Mpls

What's wrong with direct at 12.5k ?

Methinks that altitude may be a bit more than he's capable of.

I'd be flying a Cessna 172 with 3 adults. I would like a very conservative
route with lots of options if I run into any problems.

You can follow I-90 - it's a fairly well traveled route. During the
fire season you may need to deviate around fire-related TFRs, and if
you're flying a low power plane (like a J3 with a C65) it will take
some time to get up to altitude, but I don't think it will be a
problem.
For other alternatives go to supercub.org and search there; this is a
topic that's been addressed there more than once.

The old colored airways were established back when nonturbocharged piston
engines were the only way to fly, I'd start there. Green 1 went to Seattle
from Minneapolis via Alexandria, Fargo, Jamestown, Bismarck, Dickinson,
Golva, Miles City, Custer, Billings, Livingston, Belgrade, Helena, Drummond,
Missoula, Superior, Mullan Pass, Couer d'Alene, Spokane, Ephrata,
Ellensburg, and Easton.
