Sporty's Cell Phone Interface

Have any of you guys tried the new Sporty's cell phone interface that allows you
to hear both ATC and cell phone at the same time? It runs about $100. I'd be
interested in cheaper alternatives if they exist and any downsides if anybody's
experienced one.

I like the idea of being able to use the cell phone with the headset but $100 is
a lot unless I'm sure it's going to work well. One possible downside I noticed
was that it uses a AAA battery. Doesn't seem like much power.

Your thoughts?

From what I understand, the greatest downside would be that it's illegal
to use a cellphone in an airborne GA aircraft in the USA
(Something about the signal hitting too many towers at once and screwing
with the network)

Digital versus analog phones. Supposedly the digital phones are not
covered by the FCC law since they do not flood the networks like the older
phones, as per many past threads in this group.

Consider, if you will, that the US airlines are tossing around the idea of
allowing passenger cell phone usage while en route.

Well, how about that brand-new ANR headset you always wanted that
includes the cell-phone interface? Might be a cheaper alternative,
depending on your current headset.

Yeah, but at least here in Germany (GSM), the digital cell phones (GSM)
stop working at about 3000 feet.

Good God !! Depending on the model, they want between two and three times more
than Sporty's. That's a lot of spare change.

Thanks for the explanation. I hadn't given the logistics of allowing cell
phone use in an airliner any thought, but of course, that makes sense.
