View Full Version : Frankfort, Sleeping Bear Dunes book?

July 3rd 06, 05:55 AM
I was just over in the Frankfort, MI area and the Traverse City paper
was going to carry a story the day after we left about soaring in the
Sleeping Bear Dunes area. It also mentioned a book coming out about the
same topic.
Does anyone know anything about the name of the book or where one could
get it?

I did see and take a photo of the National Soaring museum plaque in
downtown Frankfort.

Sleeping Bear Dunes is one of several major Hang Gliding
sites in the area around Frankford. Clay in the ground
and lake erosion has created the very vertical sand
ridges hundreds of feet high, which only requires wind
of 10mph to soar. In the distant past Frankford was
a significant sailplane site since the ridges are within
gliding distance of the airport and the area also gets
some wave conditions at times. In the years I was Hang
Gliding there the sailplane activity was almost zero.
