Take a look at
http://www.ousterhout.net/zoom
Read carefully. There is a lot of documented factual content there.
Do a Google Search of the RAH archives as well.
The convention of using ZZZZ as part of the topic title has been around
for several years.

Yes and no.
EAA doesn't run Sun n Fun. SnF is it's own, separate corporation.
But yes, he was escorted from the grounds on multiple occasions, and
is now banned from the show, despite his suing in Federal court.

It's probably not as entertaining. But AvWeb tries to make it true.
It's like comparing "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" with "Desperate
Housewives."

Ken,
Most of what you find on ANN is merely company press releases that have been
cut and pasted onto the website. If you went to the individual company
websites you would find that story and others there for the reading. I
suppose that's too much trouble so you let Jim decide which press releases
you read. Of course, you won't find negative articles about major sponsors
but you will find falsified "news" about companies that refuse to play Jim's
games. Part of the entertainment?
From time to time Jim will publish a flight review of an airplane. What in
Jim's background makes you think he's qualified to judge airplane flight
characteristics? Or do you care? It's better to just let Jim form your
opinion? Or is it all entertainment?

As a newcomer to GA (and not yet a pilot), I look for information
everywhere. I truly believe there is no such thing as objectivity, that
every report to subjective to a point. You are right, ANN does decide what
to put on their website, and if I had the time, that I could surf looking
for press releases. Did you ever notice that magazines tend to publish a
review of a product, and within a page or two is an ad for that product?
Not random chance. The new Avweb look is dreadful, generalaviationnew never
updates much, ultraflightradio isn't bad, but the other sites I frequent are
even worse. ANN at least puts a lot of effort into their podcasts, I'll
concede that they are subjective, but I find it easier to listen to
something that is subjective than it is to listen to something that isn't
there in the first place.

Ken,
This is Chuck Slusarczyk's nightmare come to life Since you're new to RAH
you don't have the perspective that came out of the Zoom Wars of several
years ago. At that time Jim was still posting here and you could judge from
his own words what Captain Zoom Campbell is really like in the darkness of
his soul.

But in most other cases, you've got a lot better chance of eventually getting
the real story.
There have been a number of journalistic ethics scandals over the past ten
years, from Stephen Glass to Jayson Blair to CBS News and beyond. Heck, Reuters
just admitted that some of the photos they'd published of the battles in Lebanon
had been altered for more dramatic appearance.
In most of these cases, the unethical journalist was caught because complaints
or his own actions triggered an investigation by the publication's editor.
But...what happens if the editor is the one fabricating the story, or altering a
photo, or hiding a personal relationship with one of the story's subjects? What
if the editor is also the publisher?
Back in the 90s, Jim Campbell wrote an "expose" accusing the employee of a
certain kit company of criminal actions. What he *didn't* say in the story is
that the target was one of his own former employees. And she was also his
ex-fiance.
I mean, shoot, there wasn't any question of it: He'd given sworn testimony to
the fact that she was his ex-fiance (while denying it here on RAH, of course).
If he had been employed by any normal publication, he would have been out on the
street and never worked in journalism again. But of course, he WAS the
employer.
You may not like CBS, you may not like Fox, but there ARE some checks and
balances available in these and most media. But not where the author, editor,
and publisher are one in the same person. Separation of these roles brings an
unjaundiced eye to emotional topics and ensures that the editorial aspects of
the publication receive some isolation from the business (e.g., advertising)
aspects.
How much isolation exists at ANN, do you figure? When the editor-in-chief
claims that five aviation companies haven't paid advertising bills, how much
does that affect editorial coverage of these companies?
Even if the companies aren't mentioned negatively in articles, how much false
praise do their competitors receive?
I view ANN and "The Onion" about the same way...read for entertainment if you
like, but don't come to any conclusions based on it. :-)

As a newcomer you really ought to take advice from those that came earlier.
If you want aviation news and don't like AvWeb, (which I think is really
pretty good), then go to Google News Alerts

We really need everyone to let EAA know that this was a dumb move .Without
naming names I can say that this decision did not sit well with certain EAA
staff members.

Hi John
Be sure to write EAA about this mess they need to hear it from members.
And thanks for hosting the zoomland since 1998 ,I can't believe it's been that

Not quite; I was never an employee, though I was listed as an associate editor
in one of Campbell's magazines...without my knowledge. If a friend hadn't
brought a copy of the magazine home from Sun-N-Fun, I never would have known.
Richard's description does apply to other folks, such as Al Staats (Zoom booster
on RAH one day, Zoom employee the next, RAH-15 co-defendant not long after).
Tim Kerns is probably the latest example.

Me too. I guess our only chance now is to go to Pinkneyville. You know,
whatever else is said about Zoom, he was mildly entertaining. Of course, I
was never sued. When I heard about the P1 temperature 0 (Pitot) tube, I
about bust a gut. And he honestly sounded like he believed it. You just
don't find folks like that every day.

Ah, I didn't realize that was the only requirement - I thought I had to be
threatened by Zoom as well.

Actually SnF and EAA are separate orgs. But the Pres of SnF requested the
police remove zoom. I think most members of the SnF board are EAA members. He's

This is the response I got from the EAA today for the comments I sent
(below):
Thanks for your e-mail. To clarify things a bit, EAA was contacted by
Jim Campbell to supply information to support and advance the sport
pilot/light-sport aircraft movement. As we build and expand the sport
pilot community, it's important to provide accurate information at
every opportunity. This is another chance to do so.
EAA treats its participation in this matter as it would any other
request to provide technical information and expertise to a publisher
developing sport pilot resources. We do not treat it as pro or con. We
will, however, ensure that all material submitted from EAA and produced
is accurate subject to EAA's review process.
Thanks again for the e-mail. If you have any other questions, please
feel free to contact me anytime.
Best,
Dick Knapinski

I quoted the EAA website:
08/03/06 - ANN SPORT PLANE RESOURCE GUIDE INCLUDES EAA TECHNICAL
ASSISTANCE, EXPERTISE
The Aero-News Network's 12th anniversary SportPlane Resource Guide will
feature the technical expertise and experience of the Experimental
Aircraft Association (EAA), the acknowledged leader of the new sport
pilot revolution. Scheduled for publication in 2007, the guide will
offer in-depth information regarding sport pilot certification and
available light-sport aircraft. As the new SportPlane Resource Guide is
developed, EAA will provide guidance on sport pilot/light-sport
aircraft matters; provide information on local and national EAA
programs, such as EAA Chapters, Technical Counselors, Flight Advisors
and its other programs; and assist with outreach to the sport
pilot/light-sport aircraft community.
"Today, EAA is at the forefront of implementing the sport pilot rule,
so its input is invaluable to any effort to inform and educate those
participating in the exciting, new sport pilot community," said Jim
Campbell, Aero-News Network CEO and Editor-In-Chief.
I wrote:

Look at the bright side, folks: this now makes EAA's deep pockets available to
those who get Zoomed. If Campbell's book "does a CGS" on a company, that
company can sue EAA, since an EAA spokesman has announced the produced content
is accurate per EAA's review processes.
Can't get a contingency-fee lawyer interested in suing Zoom, but I bet they'll
be interested in EAA. Do you think EAA will claim that they weren't aware of
Zoom's past problems?

You have got to be kidding me! ANN's pathetic coverage of AirVenture
was the worst of all the coverage available. NOTHING but repeated
stories about the companies who paid to advertise and a couple of minor
coverages. Nothing of substance except canned stories. AVWEB and EAA
both did a far superior job of covering the event, lots of photos, film
clips and stories. ANN might as well have been a 1000 miles away.
