View Full Version : Source for new Schweizer tailwheels?
Our club 1-34 needs a new tailwheel. Anyone know of a source of new
Schweizer tailwheels, or their equivalent?

Mine has been sportin' color coordinated tail and wing tip wheels of
MUCH higher quality than original for the past five years, cost about
$5 total from the bargin bin at 'play it again' sports.
They were made to be used as in-line skate wheels...
....different sizes/colors and nice ball bearings...

most sporting good stores that carry inline skates will have wheels with
sealed bearings, may need to modify the axle bolt or bushings and you are
there.
We modify hockey pucks for wing tip wheels

Wheel? Sounds a bit high tech for a Schweizer - put a skid on it!

Hmm, so what I'm hearing is that there is no source of "official"
Schweizer tailwheels? Does that mean we need a 337 to use a
rollerblade wheel?
JUST KIDDING!
I've been using rollerblade wheels for years myself on my Ls6 (got a
spare one in the car - might just try it on the 1-34). I'm just not
sure what the federales consider legal on a certified glider. And we
have plenty of federales in our club, if you know what I mean...
And like Mike says - it would be a bit pathetic if the highest
technology on the 1-34 was the tailwheel!

Les Schweizer quoted me a new one for my 1-26.

You need to worry about replacing the wheel with something certified to
be used on an airplane as all (?) Schweizer gliders carry Standard
Airworthiness Certificates, not Experimental. You can't just put any
old thing into/onto these gliders.

Mmm. I think I know what you mean.

Heavens no. If you crash the news media will cite the cause of the crash as
failing to file a flight plan and using a roller blade wheel as a tail
wheel.
