LAT/LONG waypoints in Garmin 430

I freuently rent a C-172 with a Garmin 430. I have the simulation for
my laptop and the user manuals, but I can't figure out how to enter
waypoints that are just lat/long. The 430 will use airports and named
airway points, but I want to enter a set of points to track flying up
the coast where there are no named waypoints. How do you do that? Can
you do that?

Anybody know?

Yes, this can be done. Go to page 10 of the Waypoint chapter, which is the
USER waypoint. Once there, push the cursor button once (right knob), then
use the outer right knob to scroll to the LAT/LON box at the bottom.

With the cursor in the LAT/LON box, use the inner right knob and roll right
one click. This begins the entry mode. Enter your coordinates and hit the
enter button.

Try it with the sim...

I should clarify that entry mode is done by moving the inner right knob to
change the values, then by moving the outer right knob to move the cursor
to the next position.

Also, what I learned about the GNS430 user waypoint page is that the page
contains a few different methods for entering a waypoint, but realize that
the user only need to choose and enter one method.

You do not need to enter, say, both the VOR reference and the lat/lon.
Choose one type, then hit enter and the waypoint will be usable.

Thanks! I've used the sim to see how it works. I'll need to practice
some more before I use it for real in the plane, but that's helped me
immensely.

I probably only know about a tenth of what this thing can do...

Glad to help. I extensively used the USER waypoint functionality of the
GNS430 one time when flying a long VFR x/c.

My HSI gyro went, which disabled the heading bug mode of the autopilot.
However, the AP still had GPS NAV mode, so I simply created a series of
USER waypoints along the way using distance off VOR radials to fly around
parachuting NOTAMs.

That same trip I also used the user waypoint feature to map the boundaries
of a presidential TFR in my active flight plan. It really is a powerful
feature of the GPS.
