Is that rather uncomplimentary pre-recorded playback near the end of
flights generated by the radio altimeter or GPWS?

Yes.

(The radio altimeter is one of the primary inputs to the GPWS.)

However, the GPWS was no integration with autothrust, autopilot, or FADEC on
the A-320. The message is generated by the radio altimeter if the
autothrottles are
still in the climb detent. It sounds at 40'AGL if one or both APs are
engaged, or at
20'AGL if the APs are not engaged.

So Capn, the 'Retard' in the A320 is generated by what - GPWS? The
AutoThrottle can't be in climb detent so near the ground on finals,
right? :)
