This group's own NW_Pilot has asked if I would be interested in helping
him document his incredible ferry-flight from Bangor, Maine, to Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia. Talk about the trip of a lifetime!

See it here:

http://www.alexisparkinn.com/nwpilot's_tranatlantic_flight.htm

And check back often. He'll be sending me regular updates.

Is he going to Beirut or Saudi? The map shows Saudi as the alternate. Has
Israel reopened the airspace into Lebanon?

If going to Saudi that flight over the desert might worry me more than the
over water stuff.

I don't know. We'll all have to stay tuned for his periodic updates...

It sure is an awesome flight. I can't imagine it.

Agree 100%. Trouble is, I think he's busy flying the danged plane...

I'm hopeful that he gets some time to elaborate...

Exactly! Combine Jay's flare and talent for writing with NWP's

Augh! Don't even suggest it out loud...I'm so far behind, and there's
always so much to do... I don't have time to start transcribing, too...

i was just thinking the same thing. he's come a long way.

just proves what you can do if you put your mind to it, work hard and
don't listen to all those old farts that tell you what you can't do and
about smoking holes of aluminum test pilots. (or something like that!)

NOT TRANSCRIBING!! You are a writer, so you write it! You should put
some of these stories together and send them out to the aviation rags.

I know, I know -- I've got a great one rattling around in my head about
"get-there-itis" that NEEDS to be put on paper...but when?

Ah, crap. Whenever I hear someone say they're "bored", I just stare at
them in disbelief. How in the HELL can anyone on this planet ever by
"bored"? There is SO much to do, and so little time!

True. I still worry about his lack of judgment, at times.

If the owners knew of some of his earlier actions, I wonder if they would be
so quick to give him the keys?

When it comes to actions behind the controls of an airplane, I sure hope
not. You are supposed to have grown up, and take responsibilities
seriously, at that point.

As recently as under a year ago, some postings make me think that it has not
happened, yet, for this individual.

Don't give him a free pass, Jose. I don't think he has earned it.

People *can* change. When I was 25, I used to enjoy buzzing. Making somebody
jump out a boat into the water was the height of entertainment to me. Now, I
can't imagine doing something stupid like that. I like the maximum amount of
air between me and the ground unless I'm landing. All of us are capable of
learning.

I was once asked if it was possible to teach judgement. "Absolutely", I
answered. I don't have to kill myself to learn not to do certain things. The
fact that others tried something and had a bad outcome makes an impression on
me. Am I unique? I don't think so.

I know they can. I hope he lives long enough to grow out of it. I don't
remember what it was that he posted a few months back, but whatever it was,
I was not the only one that expressed concern over his actions.

Like I said, I hope he does grow up, and learns better judgment. I don't
think it has happened yet, though, or if it has, it has happened "very"
recently.

C'mon, Jim. If he had "better judgement" he wouldn't be flying a
single-engine plane across the North Atlantic, now would he...?

Speaking of judgement, is there any accident data for SEL airplanes
crossing the Atlantic? Since such accidents will involve foreign
countries or international waters, I am not sure if FAA records is the
place to go looking for it. What are the chances of rescue if someone
successfully lands on an iceberg, or ditches in the ocean?

Not too good. My father used to be stationed with the 57th Air Rescue Squadron
when we lived out in the Azores. He's told me more than one story about
somebody ferrying an airplane across the Atlantic only to disappear. The
squadron would go look but there'd be damned few happy endings.

He did tell me a story about a Bonanza pilot who called a Mayday on the radio...
the fellow was running out of fuel and wasn't sure exactly where he was (this
was back around 1962). Radio contact was established and they asked him if he'd
seen any shipping or anything else recently. As it turned out he'd just passed
a ship maybe 30 minutes before. They told him to turn around and see if he
could find it again. He did, and was able to sucessfully ditch alongside it.
The ship picked him up.

Dad said the next day his C-54 flew over the site and the Bonanza was still
semi-afloat. I guess those tanks were fuller of air than anything else.
Anyway, that was one lucky SOB.
