Portable GPS

I've been thinking of buying an aviation-specific handheld GPS to
replace the little hiker's model I've been using. NW_pilot's saga has
convinced me that a good unit really can be a life saver.

Any recent pireps on the new models?

Lowrance 600c does seem to give the most performance for the money,
especially for the occasional, casual pilot who isn't going to keep
paying for all those weather services available on a G496.

Please please please, don't anyone chant the consumer mantra "you get
what you pay for." It ain't necessarily so and even it it were, I don't
want to hear it.

I have a 5 year old Lowrance 100, which is the aviation model. You can
probably find one just like it on Ebay if you look, and it'll probably cost
you $100 or less. No, it won't be the latest, greatest, but if you're
looking for bang for the buck, a barely used (or used, but set-aside 'cause
the owner bought a better one) unit is an outstanding value, regardless of
whose name is on the case (Garmin, Magellan, Trimble, Lowrance, etc...).

If you are looking for a new unit, I think you'll get more functionality for
the dollar with a Lowrance than a Garmin, but I think the Garmin has a more
intuitive interface...

You got that exactly right.

As for the 100 mentioned by the other poster: There are no database
updates available for that unit.

My Garmin's have served me well. Good support from Garmin and lots of
accessories available.

Sure. The fact remains, though, that the price of the Lowrance Airmap
600c is unbeaten for what it offers. By a huge margin, too.
