OK, everyone, since some feel they have to respond to Mxsmaniac's posts, how
about being humane to all of us who don't want to read all of the crap that is
following in his wake.

It is easy to make a change to your reply, to help us all out. Simply position
your cursor in the subject bar after the "Re:" in the subject. Then, type MX,
and then continue along your merry way with your post.

This MX will allow every post after yours in the thread to be eliminated, by
people who use a newsreader that can not filter entire threads, without a
marker, but prefer not to read his ignorance and thread hijacking.

This tactic has worked well in other groups. Please be kind to others in this
group and take the time to help us block him.

Thanks, in advance.

What's to read? Skip any threads from him. It ain't rocket science.

So you are unwilling to just not read the posts so I have to do all the
work? You're a bigger idiot than he is.

That part is easy. What about the theads that he jumps into (nearly all of
them) and other parts of the thread later down that are still untouched? Do I
just write off any thread that he touches in any way? There will not be much
left to read.

This has been done in other groups. It works very well. You get to keep
reading all of the nonsense, and I can read the parts that he has not polluted.
We all win.

> So you are unwilling to just not read the posts so I have to do all the work?

ALL of the work? A mouse click, a shift followed by two letters and a tab or
another mouse click. Five actions, so even if you are a hunt and peck typer,
that would be all of 5 seconds. That does not sound like much work to me. If
it is for you, I feel sorry for you. If it was done by someone further up in
the that part of the thread, you don't have to do a single thing.

> You're a bigger idiot than he is.

Because I don't want to see this group torn apart? How does that make me an
idiot, at that, a *bigger* idiot?

Have you counted the number of other people begging everyone else to quit
responding to this jerk? The number of posts? If everyone were to do this,
that would all stop.

I think you must be the idiot for not realizing this.

If everyone will not stop responding, then this solution is the next best thing,
for the health of the group.

Oh, that really hurts, coming from somebody with a nobody name.

Please feel free to ignore me. I know I will do the same for you.

Anyone who insists on continuing to reply to his posts is not going to
bother filtering him out. Your proposed "solution" isn't any better than
just suggesting that people not reply to his posts.

Actually, that is not true. It really does work, and work quite well. Also,
they are not filtering it out, but adding to the subject. It is still up to the
reader that does not want to read the post to write a filtering rule based on
the added MX or whatever.

Over in the rec homebuilt group, there are at least 5 filter triggers like that,
and most everyone is polite enough to use them, and add them, when needed.

The problem is that there will always be somebody to respond to trolls,
unfortunately. If they would only be as kind to add the MX, or whatever when
they do, nobody that does not want to read that portion of the posts will ever
have to complain about it again.

We really ought to give it a try. It does work.

Well, good luck with that.

I've yet to see any thread where there's been a significant "contribution"
(such as it is) from him, and yet where I saw any need to continue reading
the thread. I just junk the whole thread when he starts a thread down the
toilet.

Frankly, now that I've stopped trying to talk any sense into the guy, I've
found his presence to be hardly disruptive at all.

But, if you think you can get people to consistently change the subject just
so you can exercise a filter, more power to you. Far be it from me to try
to discourage anyone from following along.

That "advice" ASSumes a lot about my newsreader.

A lot that is utterly wrong.

If you are advocating putting Mxsmaniac into a killfile, why
not come right out and say so using the appropriate terminology.

I think it would be more useful for people to tag their
replies to Skylune with 'SKY'. Then I could more easily filter
out replies to his rabid ranting ridiculousness. Mxsmaniac, by
comparison, merely shows dogged ignorance -- something that
*might* be treatable. I'm willing to stipulate that Mxsmaniac's
determination is impressive, even.

I would hope that your newsreader has some sort of killfile type
function. If not, perhaps you need to reconsider the tools you
use to read newsgroups. I'm using a tool that has been around
for a long time, and it's had that capability since forever.

yours,
Michael

Your scroll wheel broke?

That's up to you but I'm not doing your work.

People like him have come and gone from this group for the last ten
years I've been here. He's been here a couple months. In six months
you won't be able to recall his name.

So you can to it for him but not the Maniac? Brilliant.

A kill file only kills his posts, not all of the replies to his posts, but you
know that. He is in my kill file, as well as Mr. 'lune. With a tag like MX or
SKY, I can write a rule to remove all of the responses to his posts, if the
respondants will use it.

I guess that opinion is just that, and the differences make the world go round.
I find MX much more damaging, personally. If you were to propose a SKY filter,
I would gladly comply, if I were responding to 'Luanne. Did you hear the good
news? He said he will not be back! Yea!

Also, let me say that although no newsreader is perfect, or has all the features
you want, none do. They all are compromises. I have no plans to change.

Learn how to use your newsreader or get a newsreader that will allow you
better filtering options... I killfiled the troll quite awhile ago... I
do not like it when a subject changes throughout a thread because I
don't group my messages in my newsreader, I prefer them to be in
chronological order, regardless of the subject...

Killfile any post that originates from him and any thread that he starts
and that will significantly cut down on his visibility on your
newsreaders...

Or maybe you should contact him and see if he would just prepend a
"TROLL -- " to the front of any message that he posts to make it easier
for you...
