Over the last 24 hours there were 23 new Garmin GPS396 up for auction , no
one is bidding on them except 1 which went for $89 Euro. It looks very suss
that they all come up about the same time and all come from China or Hong
Kong and from sellers with little or no feedback history. Seeing as they
claim to take cash on delivery I am putting in a bid , more out of curiosity
than anything else. I know these units are worth about $2000.

When you open the box and find a brick, you'll have no way to get your money
back.

If possible, open the box with the UPS guy standing there.

Oh, is that how it works? I have never a COD . I assumed COD meant that if
I wasnt satisfied that the article delivered was what I ordered I wouldnt
have to pay, after all it wouldnt have been "delivered" I havent actually
made the bid yet , so I think I'll let it pass. I am almost certain this is
a scam, in which case I would have liked to have taken it far enough to get
the *******(s) caught....but not if it is going to cost me $200

BIG TIME SCAM - BEWARE This has come up before and there is no
recourse if you lose money on the deal. Ebay has sent countless
warnings about these "too good to be true" listings. If they are out of
country keep on going. Even if they are in country, if you don't have a
way to reach them, beware. Some reputable dealers will use a "loss
leader" from time to time to generate action but they are established
people and reachable.

Thanks shy,
After a bit more investigation I found so many things that just didnt add up
, it was clear that all of these 23 auctions were related even though they
used different names. Looking at the sellers feedback was most interesting.
Typically they had been ebay members for 4 or 5 years but only had 6 or 7
feedbacks and stangely all 7 would be on the same day and within minutes of
each other , and the other sellers would have their feedbacks on the same
day also ( and that day just happened to be yesterday). and if you actually
went into place a bid ( before the confirmation stage , they all had the
same message about postage and customs etc and all written in Italian! ).

I saw some of these last week when there were only two or three listed.
All were located in Hong Kong, but a trace of the seller placed the
seller in Sweden. <?> Also, at least back then, the sales periods
were all short - usually just a day. Pretty much no way it could be
real.

I did a search on eBay for 'garmin 396' and didn't see the auctions
you mentioned. They must have completed by now, I suppose. Are you
able to provide links to a few of them?

If you log in to eBay, you can search the history for whatever auction
items you want. AFAIK, that option isn't available otherwise.

Sure 'nuf. Thanks. It's under Advanced Search in the upper left of
the page.

A keyword search shows 33 completed auctions.

This looks like one of the bogus auctions to which the OP was
referring:

The "red flag" on this one for me would be "payment methods: Other"

If they don't accept paypal, you have to ask yourself why. And there
are not many "good" answers.

The reason for not accepting PayPal would be the possibility of a
charge-back, that I've heard costs the merchant $30. If walk-in
merchants accept Visa/MC, and accept the charge-back possibility, I am
unable to guess why an eBay seller should be any different.

There weren't any bids on that one! That's why there's no final
price. The opening bid was set by the seller.

And to add to the evidence (like there is any more needed....) the
picture shows a 296, not a 396 as described in the text...
